Edgerhorns are pretty efficient- and triodes are far more linear than any tetrode or pentode- and thus also have the 'best midrange'. A triode amp can easily make enough power.
Follow Ups:
Just experimenting, 300B, 2A3, 45 are all great, as well as some of Nelson Pass amps. I tried them all. I want to try something outside the norm. Currently using a Quicksilver SET with a pair of GE 6L6GC. I really like what I hear so far. Bruce's recommendation which is a Cyrus Brenneman amp is not a Triode. My hook up are the following:
Edgarhorns
Quickies SET GE 6L6
Jeff Rowland Capri (believe or not)
LINN Radikal
Parasound JC3+
The combo sounds amazing until I crave for something else. It's a disease.
Try a push pull DHT. You won't see many of these, and I don't know of any commercial examples, just DIY. You get the DHT sound but a lot more oomph, almost the best of both worlds, but I'm sure someone else would say the worst of both.
I heard the Pass amps at Burning Amp, and I prefer the sound of my PP 6B4G amp. I'm trying to get it to work with 300B, but need more volts on the plate and less on the filament. It works but it doesn't quite sing. 6B4G just sing in my amp.
