Which of the following tubes would give the best midrange on a SE configuration? Speakers would be Edgarhorns.
EL34, KT77, 6L6, KT66,KT88,6550 or KT90
Just curious and thanks.
Follow Ups:
My experience w/ the KT-90 is that there is lots of hysteresis in the power curve of this tube -
I would stay away from it-

when direct heated tube is not in this pool.
it really depends upon the OPT!

Edgerhorns are pretty efficient- and triodes are far more linear than any tetrode or pentode- and thus also have the 'best midrange'. A triode amp can easily make enough power.
Just experimenting, 300B, 2A3, 45 are all great, as well as some of Nelson Pass amps. I tried them all. I want to try something outside the norm. Currently using a Quicksilver SET with a pair of GE 6L6GC. I really like what I hear so far. Bruce's recommendation which is a Cyrus Brenneman amp is not a Triode. My hook up are the following:
Edgarhorns
Quickies SET GE 6L6
Jeff Rowland Capri (believe or not)
LINN Radikal
Parasound JC3+
The combo sounds amazing until I crave for something else. It's a disease.
Try a push pull DHT. You won't see many of these, and I don't know of any commercial examples, just DIY. You get the DHT sound but a lot more oomph, almost the best of both worlds, but I'm sure someone else would say the worst of both.
I heard the Pass amps at Burning Amp, and I prefer the sound of my PP 6B4G amp. I'm trying to get it to work with 300B, but need more volts on the plate and less on the filament. It works but it doesn't quite sing. 6B4G just sing in my amp.
The quality of the circuit design, the transformer and passive parts will determine the sound more than the tube.
+1...that's exactly what I've always thought as well.
If you asked ten people what constituted "good midrange", you'd likely get ten different answers.....
I personally think you need to get the top right in order to get the midrange right.....
I believe the tube with the "most extended" top end, on your list, is the EL34..... But amps are often voiced for specific tubes, you can find good examples of "midrange" with just about any of these tubes, if the amp is built right for them.
having had most, in MY amp it's either the EL34's or the KT66's. Again, in my amp, I prefer the KT66's for midrange. But I seem to have to bias my amp lower than normal to get there????????/
You might try RCA 6L6GC black plates. I spent a lot of money on old stock Genelex KT66's and then tried RCA 6L6GC black plates and was really surprised how much better they sounded. The amps are Quad II's.
RCA Black Plates Are the best in this application .
There are different kinds. Double getters, single, side etc. Which one do I go for.
But I prefer 2A3.
