Hi Folks. My first post. I am a guitarist who has also been a professional radio technician. I have used valve amps and preamps for the last 40 years and don't intend changing that at all !!!
I am underway with some valve amp projects, so hoping to learn and share with this forum.
I have some Amperex CV492, 12ax7. These are NOS ( W German) and I'm pretty certain they are ex spares from Broadcasting equipment.
Amperex 12ax7 appear to be well regarded but I really can't find much information on CV492 (variant ?). My research indicates CV is a Military term for "Civilian use"
I'm interested in people's knowledge of this valve.
regards Bob
Follow Ups:
According to Fathauer's book, 'Electron Tube Locator' CV is short for common valve.
It is ironic that the "common valve" nomenclature is not used commonly. If it was we wouldn't have to question what a CV 492 is in the first place.
In the USA, the govt. nomenclature for common tube types was VT (vacuum tube) as in VT100 which is the 807. I still can't help thinking about the VT100 DEC terminal, though, every time I see VT100.
I've used Mullard and Brimar made CV492 tubes. These are good tubes. Mil or industrial spec, I believe.
Long plate... check for microphony. If noise free and tests high --- you have good tubes. Keep them and use them.
