My enthusiasm got the better of me.
I bought a used pair of these beauties to substitute as driver tubes in my Cary preamp. Had a little difficulty getting them into the sockets but they were firmly seated.
Result: they don't work in this preamp. The tipoff was that one of my 6SN7 buffer tubes (EH) didn't light up in the right channel. The left channel buffer did light up. Flipped the buffer tubes and the same problem persisted in the right channel.
Took the Chinese tubes out and replaced the original driver tubes and everything is working.
I didn't do my homework. I had read that these tubes were okay in the Cary preamps. I don't have a tube tester but I have to assume that the tubes are fine but are just not compatible with the Cary.
Anybody have a similar experience?
Follow Ups:
I ran a Cary SLP-98P with a quad of Psvane C181-TII's with great results.
I never tried to mix and match them with other brands though.
Psvane tubes have reliability issues.
Some chinese tube sockets have very sloppy tolerances and it is easy to think that you have put the octal tube in correctly but it is actually misindexed. I am not sure that you did that but the fact that they test okay but did not "light up" in your pre would support the issue of it not being put in the socket correctly.
If you can't get those used tubes to work in either channel of your preamp,I would suspect the tubes you bought.Could you see the Psvane tubes light up at all?

I meant CV181-Tll. No,the filaments did not light up at all. I bought the tubes from a stand-up audiophile. I have to believe they're just not compatible with the Cary. BTW, I've had other preamp tubes that did not visibly illuminate and they were good tubes.
The problem with Psvane is quality control. Try some good NOS in your Cary. They will last long and sound great.
double dittorissima :)
Appreciate all the feedback. Taking the tubes to be tested today and will get back.
Either I bungled the tube placement or they just won't work in this pre. The tubes tested fine. Anybody ever try a tube adapter/socket saver as a fix?
Have you tried tensioning the sockets? You mentioned they were difficult to get in so maybe you stretched the sockets? It is normally part of tube amp maintenance. Jim McShane has a nice list of "to do" items that he reposted not long ago, I recall.
Comparing the pins on the PSVANE with my Sylvania 6N7's, the pins are farther apart from each other on the Chinese tube. That may be the problem. Perhaps the spacing on the earlier iteration of this tube or the Black Treasures was closer. I know that forms of this tube were used successfully in the Cary SLP-05 and the 98 as discussed on the Asylum and other blogs. That's why I bought them.
The issue is likely the recessed sockets in the pre. I'm using them in one of Dennis Had's Inspire amp and preamp. Excellent tubes IMHO. I have plenty of NOS that are gathering dust. You may want to call Cary service.

I agree with Mike. Perhaps there is an issue with the sockets and certain tubes?
