Running Mullard reissues in this EL84 amp, wondering if I am missing out on anything?
?best vs bang for buck?
Follow Ups:
I heard the amp with Sylvania Black plates and it was fantastic. Leben owners I know use them
I've helped a lot of Leben customers with their CS300s, and the tube of choice is the Genalex N709/EL84 (assuming it's within the budget). All the reports I've received back have been VERY positive.
Don't know the bang for the buck answer I am sorry to say, but if I had to guess it might be GE or Sylvania if you can find them. I don't know how they sound but do use a fairly close relative of the EL-84 which is the 7868. RCA are prolly the best but getting impossible to find. I use GE and Sylvania with good results.
What I do know with great certainty about EL-84s is that the real, made in Great Britain, Mullards are very, very, very good. I had some pretty old, weaker ones which worked miracles in a headphone I amp I had at that time. Get real Mullards if you possibly can save up the $400 or so you'll need. Check out the asylum trader I have had only good outcomes from dealers here. Or just find a guy with a good rep who sells tubes primarily on e-Bay and you prolly get the right tubes. They are well worth it IMO.

7868 in place of a 6BQ5?
I don't think so....unless you installed different sockets.
7868/7591/6GM5 are same with different pin-outs. Different animal.
Did you mean 7189 maybe?

I use 7868s in vintage late 1950s and 1960s integrateds. I own a Sherwood S5500 and S5000 one of which uses 7868 and a Fisher 400 which uses 7868s. I was saying that the two tubes were relatives not substitutes. I hope no one thought I was suggesting that. I own several Sherwoods one of which also takes EL-84s I think I will try Jim's suggestion of the GL. I have heard good things about that one too I should have mentioned. It would be great if the New Sensor GL also made 7868s also.

I suggest to try all the same Sylvania 1950th with the old style of the anode. Much better than a round plate. It is very musical valve.
Good Day!I would advise 6bq5 Tung Sol d-getter and 6bq5 Sylvania black the anode and not round, like philips anode style - old version (O or D-getter).I liked more than Mullard of 1950's.
