Hello,
I have an Audio Research LS 15 and use the original tubes, which are still fine. I read about NOS tubes and matched tubes. I found a pair of AMPEREX PQ 6922, TEST RESULTS 80/80 + 80/80 WHERE MINIMUM IS 60, and heard they sound very good in the rear sockets. I am not much on this, so, I have to ask, would these make a noticeable sound improvement? Would it be alright to use the original in the front sockets? I have heard Siemens are better in the front, yet I am not all that on tube rolling and have not done this in years. Do I need to find better ones, or have all there, or the Siemens?
I also would like to ask about the ARC LS 16, mine is a late model LS 15 and I heard there is not much difference?
Follow Ups:
Amperex 6922 PQ, when used in the front socket gain position will usually be very microphonic in an ARC or other 6922 brand based pre-amp. Better plan on using them in the rear cathod follower/buffer position.
Do you have any suggestions for the front pair? What about JAN Sylvania 7308?
Also a troublesome tube as far as noise and microphonics- but I would try and find a good pair of Amperex Bugle Boy 6DJ8- worth the effort -IMO. Vintage preferred is small hoop getter-grey plates 1963-1965. My favorite 6DJ8 family tube. Large ambient deep sound stage, great midrange, hf extension, dynamics, low level resolution and bass.
Well the test restults you listed dont mean much unless you know which tester this seller is using. Also you need to know that the tester being used is properly calibrated. If these tubes are on ebay I would be very careful. Further you need to have a guarantee that the tubes will not have noise or microphonics. What I would do is buy just the Amperex and experiment with them in various positions. In my experience, Amperex 6922s have always bettered the Siemens I have heard. But, the early to mid 1960s Siemens 6DJ8s are excellent as are all the 6DJ8s from Amperex that were made in the same period. Remember that in about 95% of applications, 6DJ8s can be used in place of 6922s. At the price of 6922s, I would opt for 6DJ8s. Having said this make certain that you circuit wasnt specifically designed to run 6922s, which I am almost certain the Audio Research was not.
I would be happy to take any advice. Yes, they were on eBay and were tested on a B&K tube tester. I once heard about Keven Deal, it might be worth paying more and have good tube set, instead of throwing away? They were $100 and I have heard good thing here about the tubes. If it works to use my orginal in the first stage, I could wait and buy a second set, if I heard a significant improvement?
I wonder if the LS 16 has any advantage? I like the LS 15 but the volume does not go down, while all other functions work fine, I was thinking of using one upstairs. I really like the ARC pre-amps, the LS 15 is all I need, with two XLR outs, same as the LS16, but for me, the BAT power amps seem better and they are in triode. I have two mono 60s and one VK 55, not the se model, they all sound great and not as power hungry as the VTL signature series, which are wonderful if you want to spend the money and pay for the added electric.
Thank you, maybe I shall wait until I know more, as it is, I do not find the tubes that came with it, so bad.
