As far as I know the only 5687s from the 40's was the Tung Sol ribbed (flat) plate 5687s made from 1949-1952 and those aren't them.(the one on the right)

do you mind explaining what makes those plates "ribbed"? is it the "ladder" in the center of the plate?
and when a plate is referred to as "flat", what part of the plate is flat?

Yes, it's the ladder that are called ribs.
Apart from the ribs, the plate structure as a whole is much "flatter, longer rectangle" than the later types that could be viewed as "square" or "rectangle". That would be the part of the plate that "sees" the cathode, looking at a cross section.
