I ended up with both a Conrad Johnson PV-7 and a Conrad Johnson PV-10a.
Listening to both in A/B as best I can, with Stax headphones or my Quad ESL-57's, using Dynavector 10x5 in a VPI Scout as phono or a good DAC as a line source, I find the audible differences small. The PV-10a phono is a little quieter- that's the biggest difference I've come up with.
I need to sell one or the other: my question is, which to sell? They sound quite similar. I can't really come up with a reason to sell one over the other.....

Thanks for the advice. I'm leaning towards selling the 7. They sound similar, but the 7's phono preamp is a bit noisier so I think I need that less than the 10a. It's a close call, but I CAN hear the difference in the noise from the phono stage, so that is the deciding factor.
If you're inclined to DIY mods, I have some mods which can elevate the 10A to better than PV-12 performance.

Parts quality on the PV-10 is considerably better than the 7. I would keep the 10.

But I'm surprised that the gain issues alone doesn't help you make up your mind. The PV-7 has oodles more gain, which can be a good, or bad, thing depending on the rest of your system. Then again, it may just be a non-issue. If so, sell the 10A.
Then allow aesthetics to dictate, Bill.
