Hallo ! Would like to change the 12AT7 in my Twin reverb to a better tube !
Have some russian 6H6N . They measure very good and balanced internal triodes . But gain is about 20 ! Too low ? Any other tube with low internal resistance and better gain , 40 or more ? What about E80CC ?
I want good drive and low dist. for the quad of output-tubes , now 7581Aīs.
I have now a Morgan jones type CCS with two transistors instead of that
22 K tailresistor . Thanks for some advice . Stewen

Stewen, I would place more empahsis on voltage swing than gain in the PI section. Think we may have discussed this before. This is where a nice linear tube, like a 6SN7 might be good. If you want to keep that clean tone in the output stage. Until the output tubes start to OD.
And derive most of the earler OD and harmonics from the front end.
I think this is what you are asking.
Yes , 6SN7 is a very good tube , but in the normal channel there are only
two stages ( with that tonestack in between )....... in front of the splitter . And now I have a nice RCA 6072 in V1 . With 6SN7 as LTP , donīt
You think I have to reinsert a 12AX7 in V1 ... ? I mean , will total gain be enough ( without any other changes ) if I use 6SN7 as LTP ?
Stewen, depends how you set the stages. And what kinda output tubes you are driving. I've seen many, non Fender amps run pentodes, like 6SJ7 in input with 6SN7 PI's. Like Gibson.
You need to remember that Leo was under constraint of RCA and ATT patents to use RCA tubes in his circuits. So, it narrowed his "box" of thinking, a bit. You don't have to worry about that.
Best to design some lee-way into your circuits. And try various tubes, to find the best combo.
Thanks Steven ! Good advice ! Keeping my 6072 in V1 , Iīll try a good penthode in V2 and then 6SN7 in the LTP . As I wrote , I have those nice
7581A as powertubes . But sure ...... the amp wonīt be a twin reverb anymore..... (?)
Yes ! That super reverb really sounds amazing ! But he had a lot of effects ..... ? Couldnīt see any guitarcable going into the input of the amp ?! And that mic. in front of the amp ....... what was it going to ?
I know nothing about any effects or mic ups except old tapeechoes just in between guitar and amp . Steven , can you explain a little how this guy had set up his gear ??? Thanks , S .
Stewen, Any amp needs to be miked to a board (whether real or virtual) in order to "record" the song for playback. He used a Compressor, Keeley modded TS-9, and a Delay Reverb. But, all recording of the initial portion of the YT is straight through the amp. Very little EFX dialed in, and he demostrates it has he is applying the EFX.
If you played a gig solely with no pedals or the same one or two pedals, the music would get awfully similar sounding (eg: boring). To catch the tone of the originals you are covering requires some effects. Maybe a slapback for one song. Or MRX-90 for another. Flanger for part of another, Cry-baby for another. Etc. How well your amp sounds and takes to these EFX items is a sign of a good amp.
I find that the dual 6L6GC with tube recitification has a much broader range of tones. Whether EFX induced or done by the guitarist's articulations. When compared to the solid-state rectified, four 6L6GC Twin Reverb.
There really is no way to describe the tonal difference without you taking your ES-175 down to a shop or to a person with a well setup Super Reverb. I have yet to find anyone that didn't like the tonal range of this amp. It's like a clean Tremolux head with balls. And a Twin Reverb with a bit of Bluesy soul. And those 4 X 10-inch speakers are great for lead work. I feel they react a lot quicker to input than most 12-inch speakers.
And high output single coil pups and humbuckers can be a bit TOO much clean. Super Reverb maybe a better tone to go after. Nowadays, I run a Keeley modded Tube Screamer TS-9 or my HotBox in front of my TR whenever I use it.The SR gets no pedals, except maybe the Rotary Essemble RT-20, for Leslie Effects. (one day, I'll make that real Leslie). And a touch of MXR.
The GZ34 mated to dual 6L6GC (or 7581A, in your case)... with 2 X 12-inch or 4 X 10-inch cab will have all the nice clean, Bluesy tone you'll need. Plus, that "breathing," live quality only a tube rectifier can give. The TR is a bit sterile, IMHO with hot 'buckers on a Gibson.
Again, the Will McFarlane YT:
