Hello;
Has anyone heard or made a comparison of the Russian made 6H8C metal based tube against any of the high end NOS 6SN7 tubes, in particular the Sylvania 6SN7W?
Also opinions of the best 2A3 would be apprecited.
Thanks;
BN

I once tried 6H8C and suspect the tubes were late production. I did not care for the tubes compared to Sylvania 6SN7GTA 'Y' plate tall base with top getter often called 'chrome tops'. Further, the various Sylvania 6SN7s 'T' plates including the sought after 1940s metal base Sylvania 'T' plates did not perform near as well. The early Sylvania 6SN7GTA 'Y' plate tall base chrome top provides crystal clear, neutral & detailed sonics in my amplifiers. I guess the forementioned tall base GTA are 1951-1954 production.
What I stated above does not seem to align with what others comment about the various Sylvania 'T' plate tubes. Thus, the circuit and personal preferences must be a huge factor in evaluating tube performance.

Sounds horrible on a JELabs 300b and sound great on Flesh & Blood 300b Skematics . The reason i dont know why!

Hi,
I have just removed my 1943 Tungsol round plate JAN VT-231s - which I paid 400 USD for because I was told that they were the best of the best.
I have replaced them with the black base 1960 Russian 6H8C and I can honestly that my sound now has a much much fuller Bass, more detail and a bigger soundstage. I am even hearing things that I have never heard before and all for 75USD so what must the metal base be like - can anyone help or point me in the direction of three because these black base are fantastic
Bye the way I am 59 years old been around music all my life had jst about everything out there and I am not on drugs!

Hi guys, well I have found a pair of 1960 1578 military tubes which are used amongst other things in radar and are the best 6SN7 you can ever get -
I found these tubes through Paul Indermann chowbeardog@sbcglobal.net who I
met a few months ago at Audiogon - so I am a happy camper
The 1578 Russian metal based tubes are competetive with the best 6SN7 tubes.
Finding the real McCoy, in NOS is the hard part :>
Compared to the Sylvania 6SN7W ( a great tube!), the 1578 has better ambiance and air, the W has the edge in clarity and inner detail.
In my system, where the 1578 sets itself apart is in its ability to reveal the sheer musical experience of the performance.
I have sold dozens of pairs of these tubes to different clients and all of them liked the tube, while most of them think the 1578 is the finest sounding tube they have ever heard - besting the Tung Sol round plates, the Sylvania 6SN7W, the Brimar and 5692 tubes!
An interesting post about the 1578 and the comparisons to other tubes:

Do you have a NOS pair available, if so how much with shipping to 70605?

The nos 6/12SN7 tubes are much, much better IMO. I use mainly the 12SN7 and I have an examples of every good nos 12SN7GT from Sylvania/ TS/ Ken Rad/ NU/ Raytheon etc... give me a good USA 6/12SN7GT everytime.
You're still alive :) Ya, i agree, 6SN7/12SN7 usually (not all, but almost all) sound better than all 6H8C except for 1578 version Frihed89 posted about. The 1578 is a nice tube IMO ... reminds me a lot of the Sylvania Bad Boys, but "splashier" highs.
The rest of these Russian 6SN7 subs suck.
"Live free or die"
RIGHT - and the 1578's have a TOTALLY, completely different plate structure than your run of the mill Russian 6H8C.
Rob"Let there be songs, to fill the air"
depends on what you ask it to do
The Russian tubes that are equivalents to 6SN7GTs are actually a 6N8S (Cyrillic letters.) I have not heard the metal based version, and am not sure what's different from the bakelite based version, (info anyone?) but I do like them as drivers. The Sylvania 3 hole T plates whooped them however. I've also tried them as inputs, but did not like them in that position.
