I need 2 12AX7 and 1 5751.....fast. Any suggestions as to where to get some ? Any help would be greatly appreciated....I'm looking for NOS only! Tubeworld is one that I know of.....I'm sure there are alot more.Thank's, Tom B.
Kevin Deal of Upscale Audio is a great source. I have yet to have a SINGLE problem with any tube I have gotten from him. He tests very carefully, is extremely well-versed in matching tubes to components, and is very committed to customer service.
Try jim@vacuumtubesinc.com I spoke with him yesterday and he has what he says is the most transparent 12ax7 NOS he has heard they are Telefunken wants $75 each though. I`m not sure if I will order saome or not. He will take back if you`re not happy, I`ve ordered from him several times and like dealing with him. Bob Meyer his phone #513 385 3855 Note: I seem to find you usually get what you pay for in tubes, not many free lunches out their anymore, and NOS tubes I`m sure will skyrocket in future as they are used up.
I had a good experience with these guys. They are in Canada.http://thetubestore.com/
check the archives, i've posted a list of places o get tubes from, plus others have added to it.
jack
I checked your list in the archives, and it would seem to me that unless you know exactly what you want, and have the expertise to recognize it, that you would be wise to pay a little more and purchase through Upscale or Vintage Tube Services?
Some places will give recomendations, others will not. Remember, thatjust because someone recomends a tube, doesn't mean you will like it-some places will recomend tubes based on their stock. One always takes a chance regardless of who you buy from.

You know, this question appears here on almost a weekly basis. Would it be possible to put something in the FAQ that people (anyone) could add to? I'm not suggesting comments or reviews of the vendors, just a list that could be posted with the source name and web address or phone number? Is something like this even possible with the software? It would be a nice resource, and allow for answering this question with a simple link.BillC
I recommend Steve Ekblatt's The Megasize Audio Link Collection. It's got almost 1k of links in it. Sorted, no outdated stuff.
Click the URL, below, and then click "LINKS"

Jack's post is based on his opinion of dealers. As an example he states that I am one of the most expensive tube dealers. While we're not the cheapest...and don't want to be because of the service and standards I want to maintain, there are plenty of places that sell stuff that is more expensive than us. AES sells Mullard 12AX7's for $60 that aren't even made by Mullard (if what I see in their ad is what I think it is), we're no where near that. The funny thing about this web page is that if someone reads something they take it as fact. Or that it applies to their needs.
One guy stated recently that the worst sounding 5751 was green (or white) labeled G.E.'s...that the other color was better. The fact is, they could and were made in both colors the same day. Whether or not they were labeled white or green depended on the packaging. If they were retail package or bulk pack for commercial accounts.
Yes, it is based on my opinions from experiences. How else could I post it? Do try to remember, that the list does NOT include another 25-30 tube dealers that I chose not to give business to for various reasons. Yes there are places more expnsive than you, with much worse service. Thats why I don't list them. To be honest, no retailer is the cheapst for everything, and i do try to ell people if they want the lowest price,to shop around. BUT, I also tell people that they should choose their dealers by whatever priorities they feel comfortable with.
enjoy,
Jack
Hi Kevin,I understand your position. That's why I suggested that the FAQ (or whatever) just list or link to the dealers, and contain no commentary or 'reviews'. There are a select few tube dealers that I will always call when looking for a specific tube, and some that I won't ever call again. Just a matter of experience. But I won't condemn a dealer publicly based on a single bad experience on my part, and I don't wish to see that happen here on AA by opening up the list to personal evaluations.
Bill C
It's good to get the experiences of others...so he's right. It's amazng how people will take things so literally, though.perhaps do something like Audio Review does...reviews and ratings can be attached to each dealers name.
Kevin,It's ok (pat...pat...pat). We still like you.
Now, did you ever find any Raytheon 6SL7's for me?

Yes, it's a start.I, too, believe that something like this ought to be a FAQ -- just plain links. No comments. No reviews. No advertising.
Just plain links . . .
What do you think?
Best Regards,
mds
Links *are* advertisments.
Jack
Yes, Jack, perhaps any reference to any business is, to some small degree, advertising. However, if we can eliminate the polemic, perhaps we can have a white pages kind of listing, simply pointing to possible sources.
At first, I was going to use _Thomas Register_ as my metaphor; but, then I remembered how displays ads have taken it over these last fifteen years.
O, well -- building an ongoing link page can be a good thing for Tubes Asylum, as well as the irritation level you feel when you get around to reposting your last list }:-Þ
Best Regards,
mds
No reason not to.
Bill C., I agree!!!!!! How and the hell am I going to go through the entire archive just to find Jack G.'s damm posting!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Archives are TOTALLY useless, unless you have 5 or 6 hours to go through them.tom B.
Go to the search function, click on tube asylum, type in the words "short list".look for my name.or, you can type in list, tubeworld,SND, upscale, VTS, etc. and get the same results. it takes about 60 sconds its not that taxing.

In order to draw more attention, maybe Rod should make the link to the search engine three times as large with blinking lights surrounding it. It would save a lot of repeated inquiries. The search engine is quite nimble now and an invaluable tool.Tom §.
You mean like the big, blinking sign that was on my old VW bug back in the '60s every time I would get in the car stoned and drive on the freeway at 15 MPH? The one that flashed "OVER HERE,OFFICER!!" THAT blinking sign? ;-)
It IS alo faster han it used to be.;-)

> > > The search engine is quite nimble now and an invaluable tool.Amen to that. One of the really nice features of this site.
Still, a 'tube dealer list' would be of benefit to all of us junior bottleheads. Joe's Tube Lore is one of those FAQ's I return to often, and having it easily acessible is worth a lot.
Bill C
Not everyone seems to want to use the FAQ or the search. the bi on SETs and speakers (thanks to Paul Joppa)is excllent, but frequently, if not usually ignored.;-(
Alot of time and nergy gos into those things. It would be nice if more peple used them.
jack
Hi Jack,> > > the bi on SETs and speakers (thanks to Paul Joppa)is excllent,
Agreed.
> > > but frequently, if not usually ignored.;-(
I guess for some people it's easier to spend 5 minutes typing a post than spend 30 seconds with a search, or a scan through the FAQ's. Beats me. Must be that the younger generation is changing - us old farts drive around for hours unwilling to admit we're lost; the newer kids stop at the Quickie Mart and ask Abu.
Anyway, we don't really have a good FAQ for tube dealers, which is why I brought up the suggestion. Most of the info is scattered 'round here and the archives, and much more difficult to access easily.
Bill C
I used o repost, but i've grown weary of that.

There are several places out there. I don't know that I would consider them the best but they have a good selection. One is SND Tube Sales, www.vacuumtubes.com another is Daves World of things from the past. I am not real sure of his website. I think it is www.daves-world.net or something like that. I do have his phone number which is 703-938-0194. Another place is Radio Recyclers. There website is: www.execpc.com/~radiorec/tubes.html I have not ordered from them but they do have several tubes. Another thing you can do is do a search for electron tubes and find some links which is what I have done. You can also search e-bay auctions. I just purchased some RCA 5751's on it. I haven't received them yet so I will reserve comment about that route for now. Good luck
