Hi all,
Must be about a century since I last posted here. Hope everyone's doing great.
I've been on the SS side of things - mostly - for years, but I just got a new project (Fisher X-101-C) and am looking for the current recommendations for current production 7591As. My old and trusty KX-200 has been making my brother happy for a few years now (EH7591As).
I've used EH for years, never JJs, and am aware of Tung-Sol's availability now. I'd go for the latter, but the price is just a bit out there. Are they that much better?
Just got JJs from a known retailer as it's just a quicker purchase and this is currently just a project after all. But am having second thoughts, as my experience with JJs has never quite been impressive.
EHs have had a bad rap years back for their distortion level, but I'm wondering if they improved the recipe in the years since I looked into this.
Thank you!
Radu.
Follow Ups:
I replaced a quad of EH's in my Fisher 500C with the newer reissue Tung-Sol's due to the fact they are smaller more like old stock tubes. I think the Tung-Sol's are a bit more tuneful for sure they fit better.
The EH's are not bad sounding and are reliable but physically large.
I used EH and they sounded & worked well. Sounded as good as NOS.
I'm in the process of "re-creating" a vintage amp by moving all the iron onto a new chassis. Much has changed in the 50-odd years since this amp was originally designed, so I'm also adapting the circuitry as necessary to accommodate readily available tube types. One of the changes I'm making is to replace the original 7591 outputs with 6L6 types. It's challenging (but not impossible), because the 6L6 requires a significantly higher peak drive level. If I had an older amplifier like yours, I'd do almost anything rather than spend $140 or more for a set of reissue output tubes. I realize some people really value a faithful restoration though, so take that for whatever it's worth. :)
