The difference between low power switches and high power switches is how they are made. With low power, with less than 5-6 Ampere rating, normally copper with silver plating is used inside the switch. For higher power, solid silver is normally used. But of course there are many more options available, gold plated for the smaller signals, special versions for high voltage and so on.
Follow Ups:
John "Buddha" Camille used to advocate vacuum switches to avoid arcing when switching high DC voltages.
