I'm looking for recommendations for type of solder to buy. A spool of solder lasts me a long time, last time I bought one, 60/40 resin core solder seemed to be what everyone used. I work on maybe 70% point to point tube stuff. The rest is all over the map, SMT to welding equipment. I'm not so concerned about the esoteric stuff. Thank-you.
Follow Ups:
SN63 is a eutectic solder so its plastic window is much narrower than SN60, so bad solderjoints are nearly impossible.
If you plan gold, silver or rhodium parts you are soldering, SN62 works better.
I agree with Ralph. Get 63/37 Sn/Pb eutectic with RA flux and you'll do fine. Select a wire size you're comfortable with and avoid brand "X". Kester and MultiCore are well proven brands. If and when the urge to try something "fancy/shmancy" strikes, give Cardas Quad Sn/Pb/Cu/Ag eutectic a tumble. It's good stuff, but very pricey.

when I was studying EE an upper classmate told me that 60/40 had an almost perfect flow characteristic - is 63/37 a further refinement?

60/40 is close to eutectic. while 63/37 IS eutectic. Eutectic alloys behave like pure substances and change state (solid/liquid or vice versa) at a single temperature.
No cold joints due to a slight twitch of the iron tip. :> )

I would add Qualitek to the list of quality solders.

I'm on my last few feet of good old 60/40 0.031" Kester, it's always been the best I've worked with. Maybe try ebay?
I purchased some Quad Eutectic but it had to much rosin in the core - messy.

Thank-you one and all. I just ordered some.
