Hello!
Rumors has it that film capacitor is a must for regulator circuit. And not any type of paper in oil cap or electrolytic suitable for this application.
Where should I use film cap for the attached power supply except reservoir as I want to use ASC X386S.
Thanks!
Follow Ups:
Either a paper in oil or a film cap is going to be much better than an electrolytic for the charging cap. Since you can't hang a ton of capacitance off a rectifier tube,it is important that you get the most efficient cap you can for that first cap. There are good lytics but to get the best ones, you have to go way up in value and you can't do that in your case.
The film cap is going to be much more stable then the lytic and deliver more energy to your load. They have almost no leakage and they don't stress the dielectric in film caps to get the value they need. Notice that a 35uf film cap is as big as a dual 100uf FT lytic. There is a noticeable difference in using a film cap in the first position and yes, they are much more stable because they exhibit far less leakage than a lytic.

The film cap is the 0.1uf off of the VR tubes. If you can find an electrolytic with +400 volt rating with no more than 0.1uf you could use it. I have never seen an electrolytic with that specification. All other power supply caps are strictly personal preference.
Can I replace the 5AR4 with 2 x 274B for the attached circuit?
You show solid state diodes across the rectifier tube. What's the point of the rectifier tube in the first place based on that? It's not doing anything but wasting wattage lighting up the filament.
But at least this regulator circuit seems functional at first glance.
But why a zener across the VR tube? Is it a higher voltage to protect from runaway voltage of the VR tube is pulled or fails? In that case it's a great idea.

How about that only adopt the attached regulator but different rectification, adding choke and no wired 2 capacitors in series?
Power transformer => 2 x 274B => 50uf 1000v => 10H 0.1A choke => 50uf 1000v and then feeding the above regulator circuit
Possible??
Is transformer rate at 800vct @200mA adequate for this power supply?
Thanks!
I see many problems and it's not going to work at all.For starters:
What is the purpose of the 6EM7 circuit? It does nothing useful I can see. Some attempt at shunt pre-regulation?
The OD3's have no source voltage to clamp from.
You don't start out with 1000vct to end up with 300v as your primary B+.

Sorry forgot to response your question. Friend of mine share this circuit with me, and the 6EM7 section actually is based on the John Browskie Janus circuit.
What about this supply with 2 x 274B instead of 1 x 5AR4 in the circuit?
