I had fun playing with the 6S17K as a line stage. It turned out that I really liked the sound of it despite it's disadvantage in the line stage role. Changing the volume produces a scratchy noise.

Ray,
I really like your "socket" for the tube, would make sorting easy. You would think with as many surplus planer tubes there would be a handful of surplus sockets as well.
Swapped in a Magnequest EXO-099 750H/10ma and stepped filaments up to 6.3V and the bass is back, as is Mu. I don't have a very clean filament supply on the 6S17K, and with such high Mu I would expect hum, but there is none. Given the power rating of the grid on the data sheet it's begging for a little positive grid which I hope to try. If a tube ever sounded better than its data sheet plate curves this is one candidate.
The lower plate resistance of the GS-4V allows it to work with an Edcor GXSE5-600-15K. The 15W plate rating of the GS-4V suggests a little P-P amp if you could keep them cool.

You are correct. I bought 10 of them and found it very easy to swap them and match them up into pairs. There was considerable variation.
As far as I can tell, they are very un-microphonic, which is rare in a direct heated tube as far as I know. Compared to the 6N6P tube I also tried, they sounded very un-tube like, which may or may not appeal to listeners. I found I was hearing more detail with them than with other tubes I have tried in a similar parafeed topology. Considering their low cost, I think they are terrific to play with.
