Way back at an AES convention, I had the good fortune to meet John Stevens. He offered to take me over to a studio (I think it was The Mastering Lab) to show me one of his machines in use. We got into his gold Mercedes (which was tres cool, especially for a young audio engineer driving a Ford station wagon) and went over there. Sure enough, there was a Stevens multi-track that handled tape, well, darn near as gently as an A80. I was very impressed. I'm still grateful for him doing that for me.
