I have both Players and sonically the Revox seems to wipe the floor of the Technics. The Technics has not been professionally adjusted but I think the tube electronics in the Revox just sound better IMHO. There is no comparison in tape handling that the Technics is much softer in its handling of tape. I am only listening to prerecorded 1/4 track reels so that might also be part of the question. I just wonder if the Technics solid state electronics don't stand up to the Revox.I have heard so much about the Technics. Maybe it just needs work but I expected the Technics to be much better. Any comments? Bob

It's not so much that it's tube vs. solid state as it is that the Revox is a better-designed product. Studer/Revox machines will always outperform a consumer-grade Technics.
I would agree with mcgjohn that updated heads will make the G36 sound even better, although I have no way to verify that.

yep ,stock technics playback electronics are so-so at best, so your findings are not surprising.
head technology is pretty antiquated on the Revox. The latest JRF P/B head would likely make a marked improvement.
As a rule, tube preamps sound better than solid state preamps unless the solid state preamp is super sophisticated (like FM Acoustics or Cello sophisticated). If your Teckniks hasn't been recapped (had the electrolytic caps replaced in twenty years) then that could be an issue. But most people using the Teckniks deck are using outboard play preamps. The capstan motor in this deck is a very special one and parts may become an issue. You might make sure your motor circuitry has been recapped recently too as you don't want it to crater on you. And keep it well lubricated and dust free. Ray

THE PLAYBACK ELECTRONICS ARE BETTER SOUNDING IN THE REVOX
