I ran across this, just browsing through eBay.

... and the thing was a constant problem even back in the 70s with crystalized solder joints. I wouldn't pay more than a couple of hundred, and expect to do a lot of work on it.
$4k? Must be a typo.

... I posted the auction because it is claimed to have been used at Capital Records.
If I spent $3950 (or more) on a deck, it would be a 3M or a Stephens.
Hey Jack, before you spring for the Ampex, consider that you can buy my one-owner mint condition Revox A77 for a thousand dollars less. Limited time offer. That thousand can buy you a nice tape-baking oven. I'm just sayin'.
lol
Yep, Richard is correct; way too much for a machine missing parts, and that assumes heads, rollers, etc are all good, which is doubtful.
Thanks, Jack:
I'm afraid that the person who put up that machine for auction is slightly delusional. Even if it was in absolute mint condition, such a machine would never bring that sort of money in the current market.
As you saw in the images, there are knobs missing, some mismatched and of course, the original meters were removed and installed in a bridge like configuration up front and at the top. That is cool, but unoriginal.
Once upon a time, the Voice of America in Washington, DC had ROWS of decks like that (they might have been 351 series) for tape duplication purposes. I saw them myself, perhaps twenty of them in a row.
I even spotted such decks which showed up a Urban Ore in Berkeley, years ago for $100 in a roll around console.
I also sold my 351-2 in PERFECT condition with custom road cases to someone about eight years ago for $800.
There you go!

I bought one in better condition than that for $200.
