I'm looking for a subwoofer for my home theater that will also be used to extend the low end of my Maggie 1.6QR's (used for stereo only- can't find a center channel I like to use with them). Say 90% Home Theater/10% Music(for Blues/Rock or Classical Organ). My home theater room is 4-5,000 sq ft.
I don't want to have to lug a big subwoofer from room to room so I'm thinking about getting a Sunfire or a Velodyne HGS. Does anyone have any experience with mating these to Maggies? Are there any other subwoofers I should consider? My budget is $2,000 or less.
Thanks in advance for your input.
Consider the Vandersteen 2wq subs for around $1300. To understand more of its flexibility in matching the 1.6's for home theater and music, look it up in Vandersteen.com web page. I have them paired to my 1.6's and you can't tell they're there except you now notice that the bass extension of your maggies has gone deeper. It has an adjustable q to allow you to adjust its tightness or boominess. Having three eight inch woofers allows this sub to be fast enough to keep up with the maggies. It has and equivalent area to a 14 inch sub but with much better control and dynamics. Happy listening!
I heard the 1.6's mated with a Velodyne FSR-12 a couple of weeks ago and I thought very highly of the sound. In fact, it sounded as though it was just one pair of speakers were at work. This was obtained by leaving the sub at almost the lowest volume setting. As far as I know, you probably want to stay away from anything larger than a 12inch in order to blend very well with the maggies.
I haven't heard the hgs or the sunfire so I can't comment on those.
Another couple of subs that I've been recommended to try with maggies is the ACI Titan and a Monitor Audio sub. But I have yet to try either of these since there is no local dealer for them.
You say your home theater room is 4-5,000 sq. ft. Let's say, for this example that it is 4,500 sq. ft. One way to construct a room this size is to have a room 90' x 50' (of course there are innumerable other combinations). I would not call such a space a room, but something closer to a warehouse. At any rate, it seems that you'll need something more that a "small" subwoofer to fill that space?
John,
Sorry- I meant to say cubic feet. My ceiling is about 13' tall.
ps. If the warehouse didn't have a ceiling, one wouldn't need a subwoofer, you'd need a canon to produce any bass. I think generally a ceiling can be assumed for most rooms, at least the ones I've been in.
I ask because the 1.6 doesn't really need a sub & if you want to extend your bass for HT purposes it would require a far less transportable unit than you have in mind. The 2 suggested would only extend the LF like an octave. IMHO, WAFWOT!
Sunfires would mate quite well w/ the MGCC1, but if you intend on really extending the low end of your 1.6s it would require a Velodyne 15" /18" (FSR / HGS). Translation: virtually unportable.
Mart,
I don't use the MGCC1. Actually, I don't use the Maggies in my home theater at all- I use a pair of 15+ year old Infinity's that roll off at about 50hz (not that it matters since my LFE takes all of the output below 80hz).
I'd use the Maggies but then I have to use the MGCC1 as a center channel. I don't want to do that becasue 1) it is huge and 2) it has no bass below 150hz. This means one has to use a dedicated center channel subwoofer to cover the area from 80hz to 150hz or live with a big hole in the response.
The sub I'm looking for will be used in the home theater system almost all of the time- I just thought it would be helpful for it to be capabile of mating with the Maggies for certain music and in case the MGCC1 gets replaced with something more practical.
Thanks for your input. The Maggies do produce ample bass- maybe I should forget about trying to augment it.
Harry Pearson from The Absolute Sound places the Magnepan MG 1.6
in combination with the Sunfire sub (a pair of them actually) on his
"Editors Choice" list with a rating of 3 stars (The Von Schweikert VR-8
received 2.5 stars at $18,900...the Innersound Eros 3 stars at $4000 or
so and the Thiel 2.3 2.5 stars at also close to $4k). When PROPERLY
set up I have heard the sunfire work very well with a number of
systems while I have never heard the equivalent Velodyne cubes do
the same (though a used ULD-18 would put any of the tiny boxes to shame).
Maybe that is why the Absolute Clown went belly up, and only r4ecently revived.
The small subs you mentioned will do just fine for HT - do not expect them to blend well with the Maggies for music though. If you want to try another small sub - you can look at REL (much better integration capabilities with the maggies).
About every other sub I can think of is a much larger box than what you are looking for. Good luck.
the 95 pound vandersteen 2wq will work better than all as it is the quickest with 3 die cast downward fireing slot loaded 8inch woofers with the 6 db per octive crossover the optional one from the model fives will keep your midrange integrety fine the other subs will sound like they are playing yesterday this is something even hp doesnt know about how bout that parots
