I traded into a pair of speakers a few years ago. I've got maybe $100 in 'em and they have suited my teenaged son just fine. Now that he is moving out the first of the month, I started to see what he had, needed and I was willing to part with.
A close inspection of his speakers sure reminded me of those infamous "van" speakers. I'm sure everyones heard the story that is now practically an urban legend about some "high end" speakers being sold in parking lots and on college campuses out of the back of a van.
Anyway, they are: Acoustic Reference, Studio Monitors, Series 1201 with two knobs on the baffle and a note about Liquid Cooled. They must be studio monitors because they are black! :-)
Are my suspicions correct? Either way, they wern't that bad for $100 on an old JVC 35w receiver playing rap.
You own a set of speakers that have the widest distribution network, instant delivery from a fleet of vehicles, dealers that maximize your time by coming to you, purchasers with a distinct strong feeling on their ownership, and all from a line with the largest price knock down in the market.Yes those are white vans.
They are perfect for rap.
Yep, those are the beasts. They have come in several different cosmetic arrangements, but they fit the description perfectly. For $100, they are not horrible. For the $400 that most people get taken for, they are junk...... Sean

They may not be "White Van". I have a friends speakers that he wants me to rebuild. I have had them for six months now. (Hey, he's not paying me!)If I didn't know better, I would say they were white van. They are 4-way, 12"(no xo),4"(no xo), 2" paper tweeter (L-pad), and the topping on the cake, piezo tweeters with just an L-pad. They are called Criterion 4000's. He bought them for, now get this, $400 at Circuit City back in the early eighties. Did CC do white vans too? Anyway, I am trying to do something with them, but the son's of stiches don't want to cooperate. The 4" has to go. I can't even get any parameters on it with the WT. It's not fried because it will play if that's what you call it. I can't believe I agreed to do this for free. Friend's, who needs them.Clayton
... much like Optimus is a RadioShack house brand. Jeez, I haven't seen a Lafayette since the late 70's.
...
Not to complicate things, but "Criterion" was a brand name used by Lafayette Radio Electronics (LRE, remember them? ...sort of like Radio Shack, but with both house-brand and name-brand equipment) in the late '70's. Perhaps Circuit City bought the name when LRE went belly-up, or maybe there really was a Criterion company?mrh
