I have not shopped for small (Tiny) monitor Speakers in quite awhile, so I don't know what's available.... But what are the current Standout small speakers? And by small, I mean 8 inches or less tall... OK, 9 inches might be OK.Cut-Throat
Follow Ups:
Sold through Decware.
or used something from the Teac Reference Series such as the LS-H130.
Genelec speakers are mostly head of the pack. See link below.Relatively expensive, though: US$350 a side.

I've owned Totem Dreamcatchers. Yep,slightly tipped up top, however, they image like no ones business. Another suggestion would be a pair of PSB B4's. The PSB's love power though.
...pick up a pair of ADS L300E on FleaBay, for about a hundred bucks or so, and enjoy.
I've tried to "upgrade" mine a few times.
I'll never sell them.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
To clarify my earlier post. The 310AW was in production prior to Directed acquiring ADS...those are marked made in the USA. However Directed did continue to make the 310 models and those are marked in China.
I realize this is an older post but I wanted to follow up on a couple of the reply's. The L310AW's were actually made prior to Directed Electronics purchasing ADS. I've seen a pair L310AW's with the production date of 1996. Directed didn't acquire ADS till sometime around 1999.
Do you know what the difference is between the L300e and the L310 is?
Cut-Throat
The 310 was made after Directed Electronics bought ADS.
The 310 has a "plastic" woofer of some sort, while the 300 is paper.
The tweeters are different too.
I've never compared them so don't know what the sonic difference is.

Bought a pair of L310s AW (Upgrades to the 300e) this morning. They cost more (they go for $200) as they have better components from my research (Non Foam Woofer, Better Binding Posts etc.).... thanks for the tip.... We'll see how they 'stack up' against my other small speakers.....Cut-Throat

...stands for "all-weather".
I'm not sure all 310s are that way and what difference the "AW" has on sonics. I didn't keep up with ADS after they got sold.
Best of luck. I hope you like them.
If not, try a set of L300e. BTW, the L300e has a rubber surround, not foam ...at least all the ones I've seen.

I think the Robust Binding Posts sold me on the deal... Also, I know that for certain that the L300 had foamed Woofers that eventually had to be replaced.. Maybe that was the Difference between the L300 and the L300e.... For sure the L310 had Rubber surrounds.... I Don't want any foam woofer rot!
Cut-Throat
L300's had rubber surrounds when I sold them in the 80's.

I think the started making them in the 70's, so it could be from before I started selling them.
Dave
...and the surrounds were rubber.
If the 300 ever had foam surrounds, it was likely a re-badged Braun product.

Yes, I knew that the AW stood for All Weather..... The Seller had both the L300e and the L310aw and I had asked him about both speakers for sale and how they compared... Here is what he said.....
"The 310s had a bit more depth to me ( in as much as a small 3-4' mid bass driver can produce). Imaging was same, as was the timbre and tone of vocals and instruments."
So, I decided to pop for the extra $50 and go for the L310s.

...that little box has a 5.25" woofer in it.
They are really impressive for their size.
Best of luck with them.

Silverline Minuet would be on my short list, although I have never heard it!
Measures 9" H x 5.5" W x 9.25" D. Haven't heard them myself, but they've received very good reviews.

SVS has a few new tiny speakers getting good reviews.

I have the small A2, the larger A5's, and their bluetooth model. I like them all. Those are all powered, but they make passive speakers too.
They seem to be alot of product for the price and the fit and finish from what I observed when I listened to them in the store would appear to be there as well. I think they offer no cost in-home auditioning...

I have the 5+, a little bigger than what you want.
They need the Matching Sub.
No bass at all otherwise.
Nice Combo, tho.
Tried the smaller Bluetooth model, way too thin for me.
I have and like the Bamboo too, and was told they sound better than non-Bamboo models from A.E.

I have used a pair of P4's in my desk system for many years, great speakers.

Heard their systems at CAF last year. If you can get over thew DSP they sounded great, are not expensive and all you need is a source.

The KEF LS-50 has been well-regarded. Harbeth P3ESR.
I use my small speakers on a shelf, so, if ported, must have a front port like PSB Stratus Minis or B&W Nautilus 805, but these may be too large for you?
Neumann KH80
There are expensive small ones like ProAc Tablette. In the budget group Dali Spektor 1 looks very good. $229 on Amazon. 5 star from What HiFi.
The Dreamcatcher had a fantastic review in Stereophile but John Atkinson's measurements pulled it down.
Cheers
Bill
Wouldn't be the first time that a decent sounding piece of audio gear measured poorly in JA's hands.
They don't call him John 'measuring-the-wrong-thing' Atkinson for nothing.
If the reviewer likes it but JA says it measures badly, BUY IT!
"They don't call him John 'measuring-the-wrong-thing' Atkinson for nothing."I've never known anyone to call him that, and indeed, I wonder what it means. It is not just a simple matter of Good vs. Bad. You neglect the fact that JA also did some listening and found what he heard did correlate with his measurements. I have found JA to be an excellent speaker reviewer in his own right.
"However, the more I listened, and more importantly, as I listened to a wide range of different kinds of music, I became aware of a degree of congestion in the upper midrange and a slightly nasal coloration. Both characteristics were apparent with solo piano recordings. With my recording of Robert Schumann's Symphonic Études, which is scheduled for release in the fall, piano notes in the region of the upper-frequency port resonances were accentuated, jumping forward a little in the soundstage. Richard Lehnert's speaking voice on Editor's Choice also revealed the nasal coloration."
Not a bad speaker at all, but I would probably not go out of my way to audition a Dreamcatcher.

Reviewer BJR said "Of all the speakers I've reviewed in the past 28 years, I have never enjoyed music more through anything else, regardless of price". But JA was disappointed citing strong port resonances and elevated top octaves. But how does it matter if its sound was the best of last 28 years regardless of price.
Bill
Harbeth has been getting big bucks for measurable 'resonances' in their HL5 lineup for decades. Snell and AudioNote have as well.
We did a entry level 'shootout' at a local Audiophile meetup, small amps and speakers including the ELAC UB5 and a ELAC Debut tower with various low priced amps.
Clear winner was the Totem 'DreamCatcher' driven by a cheap Emotiva A100 integrated amp.

83 db sensitivity is pretty Low... by any yardstick.
Not a good omen imo. Subtlety isn't likely to be their strong suit. Besides..Going to need a biggish amp.. just to make these passable,
I would think. Mabe a used ? pair of PSB Alphas.. would probably be a Far Better choice?
Hey ! these are 89db AND have a decades long track record

A long time ago I had a pair of the original SuperZero's, now v2.1. Small, solid build, with a sub produced a good sound. See link below and see what others say. $125 each. 9" x 5" x 5.5" (H x W x D). What is your width limitations? If you can put the speakers on their sides, it might open up your options, i.e., Gallo Strada's, but they much more expensive.
I haven't heard them, but their larger sibling Art is quite good and the Sun did get a favorable review from Stereophile.
The only other speaker I know of under 9 inches tall that I would consider for a music system is the Paradigm Atom - but I'm not claiming I know every tiny speaker out there.
Note that both of the above speakers are ported. Something to keep in mind if you're trying to squeeze them into a tight space.
What's the application?
if you can find a pair.
They are out of production but for a REALLY small (4 in. Scanspeak mid-woof) speaker, I've heard nothing better under $1000.
They must be amazing! The Model 1 is STILL one of my very favorite speakers I have ever auditioned. In looking at the Totem website they have a new smaller model name the Kin Mini. That might work for your needed small space....
They both throw a big soundstage and image well, they both have good resolution, taut bass, and they both have a balance that's tipped up a little towards the treble. The Mani 2 is by far my favorite Totem speaker, but the Model 1 and Dreamcatcher are pretty good too.
If the Sky model replaced the Dreamcatcher? The only other speakers I have loved as much as the Model 1 is the Quad 11 and 12L
If you like the Quad 11L and 12L, you might keep your eyes open for a used pair of Focus Audio FS-68 or FS-688. I owned the 688s for about 10 years, and I had shopped the Quads and the Totem Model 1 before settling on the Focus Audio speakers because they had a little more presence and midrange warmth.
If you can go a bit bigger-
ProAc Tablette-
