Ric, good point! or points... in any case. I'm looking at less than 300 dollars, a 20 x 24 room that flows into two others with partial walls, and my tastes are primarily 70s, early 80s, (lighter rock and soul).

Here ya go!
It's never a good idea to buy speakers based on what others recommend. But with your budget and room size, these Pioneers are a good option. They are designed by a speaker genius, and they perform well beyond their asking price. They are nicely efficient too, which helps, as your Yamaha receiver is a bit Manilow if integrated amplifiers are supposed to be hard rock bands (wattage ratings are an alarmingly unreliable specification to follow, either with output from amplifiers or handling ability of a speaker). If you want serious bass, you'll need either sub-woofer, or a pair of much less refined coffins by brands like Klipsch or Cerwin Vega, but musically, these brands leave quite a bit to be desired unless you are a real headbanger or Punk Rocker.
I would recommend buying used. Maybe check out Craigslist for speakers in the $300 range, go and audition them. If they don't work out or you move up you can always resell. Something with pretty good bass and not too bright. Tell the owner what you're looking for, too. Good luck!
That's a good sized room that will need more than a mini monitor to fill.
If you can find a nice pair of Klipsch KG3.2's they should fill the bill and no sub required.
Edit: the above recommendation depends on whether new or used.
