I need to be able to move the speakers in and out of position because of limited so size is important. I have a budget of $3500 used. Any suggestions? It's a vinyl only system with Herron electronics. Solid 150wpc monos, so power is not an issue. Rooom is 20 x20 but listing is pretty nearfield.

No one mentioned Proac? also some of the dynaudio's.
I don't know what you consider small, but Vandersteen 2ce sigs would be my choice and its under your price range, Great with vinyl
For reference, I have had dozens of pairs of speakers over the years, ranging from $200 to $12,000. They were all "good", but individuals hear differently and have different musical priorities.
I currently am enjoying 4 pairs: Monitors from Slverline and Joseph Audio (RM7Si SigII - one of my top 3 all time speakers for their size), a pair of Odyssey Lorelei (upgraded "Kismet" crossovers) which are a superbly musical, nearly full range ( <30Hz) speaker, and a "system" of Gallo Strada 2 with 2 TR-3D subs which are unbelievably fast and accurate and go down to the low 20s.
Either of the latter 2 would work really, really well. The Triton 5 or 7, 206 or 208 Revel, JM Reynaud, and many of the other suggestions offered would also be good choices.
BTW - any of my speakers, if interested, would be for sale. (I've got MTSE and not sure how long I will last) (MTSE - "Must Try Something Else"). Good listening!
Great Thread.. thanks for all the recommendations. I will probably soon be looking for similar speakers for mostly progressive rock in a small treated room.
Top of my current list to check for floorstanders is the new Golden Ear Triton 2+, and for monitors audition would be Amphion Argon 3S

I think the nearfield listening distance requirement is a very important consideration.
Merlin VSM Black Magic, Joseph Audio Pulsars, Spendor A7.
I was in the market for a small floor standing speaker last year in the same price range. I auditioned the Golden Ear Triton 5, Monitor Audio Silver 10, PSB Imagine T2, Linn Majik 140 and a Dynaudio floor standing model in this price range (forgot the number). I picked the PSB T2 because I liked its midrange better than the others auditioned and its bass was surprisingly very good. A close second was the Golden Ear Triton 5 that I liked better than some of its more expensive siblings in their line up. I didn't audition the Revel 206 but a friend just bought it and it's worth checking out.
If you have a small room you might consider a used pair of Devore 8s or Super 8s. They are in the price range. These are great speakers with a "draw you in" flavor. Also, they are efficient and do not require huge watts to sound great. I had a pair of Triton 7s that I loved, but they were too much for my near field room. The ribbon tweeter was too over powering. They sounded sublime in the dealers larger room however. If I get a bigger room in our newer house, I will consider them or the 5s again.
Tom Collins
Used Epos M Series. Particularly the M16 or M16i. It will be tough to find a pair to audition.
I currently own the GoldenEar Technology Aon 3 bookshelfs and would just like to, "3rd" the GoldenEar Triton series. They are great sounding speakers!
Lots to listen to in the upcoming weeks.
Check hifishark for a Triton 5 with Gallo sub for 2100.
Cheers
Bill
Check out the Gallo 3.5
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Audio Physic Virgo. There's a pair on Audiogon right now for $3500.
There are four pair on Agon

Was getting ready to mention Audio Physic.
When I was a dealer, I had a dedicated M. Greene tunable room (still have the room and Herron VTSP-3A r03) that I mostly used to demo a full Herron system including phono with Audio Physic speakers. The Virgo was the most popular seller. Fantastic synergy.
I loved the old JM Lab/Focal Micro Utopia. Probably all but impossible to find though.

I have the Focal micro utopia with an REL B2 sub and it is awesome.
They are and I just reread the thread title and saw it was floorstander not stand mounted or bookshelf. That said there is a pair of first gen full size Utopias on Agon for 9800.
I was a dealer for them and we first had mini utopias then got micros. The micros were much better. Also every other line Electra, Cobalt and Chorus didnt do it for me. The HF and mids on the Utopia line were in a completely other league.

There is a pair of Reference 3A Venas on the Trader. I have the Grand Veenas and after 40+ years in this obsession am totally satisfied with them. Good p[rice and a terrific speaker.
I've owned Spendor floorstanders years ago. I think these would fit the bill!
If I had the room and your budget, I would look at Spendor or Joseph Audio. I just saw a couple of models for sale at another site that are well within your budget.
If you don't mind going to a stand mount speaker, the Monitor Audio Silver 2 has a 8" bass driver and puts out a good amount of bass in my 15x35 ft. room.....
For small floorstanders I always throw my recommendation in for my Avalon Symbols. Not made in quite awhile, but they do appear used from time to time. New they were $3500, used I think around $1800. Love mine, especially for a vinyl system. I'll link to a review in German with an English translation in there somewhere. It is a very accurate description of what I hear in my speakers.
since you specified used...
Never liked the BAM. Extra rack space and interconnects. Great speakers if you can tolerate the BAM and don't need to move a lot of air.
Really like and prefer recent revision TSMs (I own a pair, had VSMs when I was a Merlin dealer) with subwoofers.
Check the reviews all over the net. Sized to meet your needs. Can be custom ordered with your choice of finishes.
There is no beer in food, but there is food in beer.
it seems that the top of this line is right up the OP's alley. bass into the basement and a ribbon tweeter too. i hope these are at the Newport show.
...regards...tr
Maybe small stand mounted speakers would be more appropriate to your needs. I've found that subwoofer/satellite systems can provide excellent full range sound. A floor-standing speaker might still require a subwoofer for deep bass when moved away from walls and out into the room. I graduated from my subwoofer/satellite system to floor-standing speakers a few years ago, but I found I still needed my subwoofer for the bottom octave.
You can buy a good subwoofer for $1000 or less and a good pair of stand mounted two-way speakers can be had of $2000 or less. In fact, another way to go would be with active monitors and a subwoofer. Dynaudio makes some excellent sounding active monitors for around $1700 .
If you still want to go with a floor-standing system, check out GoldenEar Technology. I have a friend with a pair of Triton 7's and they sound very good. He is a vinyl enthusiast, too. The larger Triton's have a built-in amplifier for their subwoofer section.
Good luck,
John Elison
Second the motion on the Golden Ear Triton series. I've had a set of 7s (the smallest of their floor standers) since last fall and have really enjoyed them. Excellent bass for the size, superb highs and an excellent midrange. Definitely worth a listen IMO.
Thanks but I've been using monitors and I want to try another paradigm. I'll check out the Golden Ear.
If you listen in the near field and insist on a floorstander that's not terribly heavy, audition the Ohm 2000 or 3000.( choice based on total room volume) He offers a 120 day audition period. In my experience, you'll never find a floorstander that does a better disappearing act in the near field.
