I was looking for some great computer speakers, and upon the suggestion of one of my mentors, I bought a pair of Fostex PM.05 self powered studio monitors. They are a 5 in 2 way with built in amps.
They are ungodly musical.
So, my friend heard them, and we ordered a pair for his room, to use with a Denon Receiver with pre outs.
He already had an Infinity subwoofer, with the built in RABOS Equalizer.
We placed the Fostex PM 05 monitors on stands, and had to get a pair of long RCA to XLR Male connectors to go from the Denon Receiver pre outs, into the Fostex Monitors. The Fostex PM 05 Monitors have built in amps, so all you have to do is run out the pre outs of your pre amp or reciver, and you are in business!
WE set the digital crossover in the Denon Receiver for 80 hz, and let the Infinity Subwoofer handle the bass below that.
People, let me tell you, the sheer musicality of these Fostex Monitors are amazing!
The midrange and imaging are literally to die for. Compared to my old B&W Matrix 801's, the little Fostex are just as good, if not better, in the midrange, and imaging.
The Fostex Tweeters are ultra smooth, lacking just a little air and detail, compared to the B&W 801's.
Freed by the Denon's crossover to not see any Bass below 80 hz, the little Fostex will play plenty loud.
The Infinity Subwoofer with the built in RABOS equalizer, if adjusted properly, has fast, powerful, musical Bass.
The whole system is simply amazing, and will quite possibly blow away what you have now, seriously.
The little Fostex PM 05 Monitors we found for 299.00 a pair.
How the hell these are used for Monitors is beyond me. They make even bad recordings sound listenable, and great recordings sound spectacular.
Follow Ups:
I've heard of, heard, and seen Fostex products for at least 25 years.
Still haven't found a reason to buy any of their products.
Maybe it's just me.
I used to live in Seattle, back in the 80's. I went to Winter CES in Vegas in 1982. I went by a room at CES, and it sounded like a clarinet was Live in the room. It stopped me in my tracks!
It was the Fostex Room, and a super high end Fostex monitor was playing.
It was a thing of beauty, with a wooden horn made out of some exotic wood.
It was driven by all tubes, and being fed from a master tape machine.
It had pure silver litz wire connecting it to it's pair of tube monoblocks.
It was truly stunning in it's sound.
I said to my friend, as we left the Fostex room where everyone spoke Japanese, "These motherfuckers are audiophiles, just like us"
No one spoke English, in the Fostex room, but we all understood the sound of music.
I am very happy with the Fostex PMO.5 MK II speakers hooked up to my computer, and my friend is pleased with them in a smaller room budget stereo system.
My pair sounded great, right out of the box, and even better as they broke in.
Cannot find anyone in the US who sells it.
I found it easily when I did a google search, the link below is the first one that popped up.
I got my pair and the one for my friend on Ebay
It was in a banner in reversed print:
This product is no longer available at zZounds.
It seems the Fostex PM05 MKII has been replaced with a newer model.
The new Model is called the Fosex PMO.5N
It looks basically the same, except they have radiused the edges of the baffles by the tweeter, presumably for even better imaging.
Amp power is still the same, and drivers LOOK the same, but there may be subtle changes ?
The cool things about these Fostex Monitors is they are sold at pro audio and music stores. Nearly all these types of stores will allow you to try them at home, and return them, no questions asked, if you do not like them!
Some Audiophiles may look down their noses at Pro Audio Guys, and Musicians, but as a rule these types are extremely fussy about their sound.
So, the stores that cater to this group of people have to give in home trials, as long as you pay for the speakers first.
Those of us who like to fuss with different amps and speaker cables will be shit out of luck with these Fostex Monitors.
However, those of us who love music will be tickled pink, because the amps are IN the speakers!
Really, if you are in a small room, and don't listen to Rap, they have real good bass, for such a small speaker.
In that case, all one would need is a preamp, OR, what would be really cool is a CD Player with output level controls on it.
That way, one could bypass the preamp altogether !!!!!!!
I judge all speakers by how many "God Dam that sounds good" moments I have with them.
I will not allow speakers that suck to be in my home for long.
Life is far too short to listen to shit speakers.
You are right! Fortunately, this was not a limited production speaker.
Most places are sold out of them, and perhaps Fostex has replaced them with a new model ?
If so, I have not heard it, and would never suggest anything I have not heard and loved.
Being discontinued does not mean it was not good, and opens the door for a person to get a great deal, if you can find a pair.
They are well worth seeking out. They continue to flat out amaze me, every day.
I bought my pair off of Ebay
Worst advert. Ever.
LOL, I agree, it really is pretty stupid. But make no mistake, Fostex is very much an audiophile speaker company. Their full range drivers and some of their horns are cherished drivers in the audiophile community.
Some people who own "high end speakers" are totally unaware how truly awful some of their speakers really are.
They buy expensive speakers that sound like shit on 75 percent of the music they like, and instead of realizing their shit speakers are seriously flawed, they get deluded into believing the expensive shit speakers they bought are "revealing".
I really feel sorry for those people, and try to set them free, but for some reason, they have more faith in some high end audio dealer who just made 600 dollars on a thousand dollar sale, then on a fellow music lover like me, who has nothing to sell them.
The fact is, many so called high end speakers really suck, and are little more then fixed tone controls occupying floor space in your home, that impose their flawed sonic signature on all music unfortunate enough to pass through them.
