I'm quite partial to 'Monitors on stands' and so have owned lots of stands over the years. By far the best stands I've found are the Skylans in terms of looks, quality, and most important sound quality.
I've owned lots of Monitors, so that means lots of Skylans. I just got a new set for my Harbeths and Stirling LS3/5a V2's. I see Noel (aka 'Mr. Skylan') is not resting on his laurels - these keep getting better.
He's using a new smaller column which looks VERY good with a smaller speaker like an LS3/5a. Makes it easier to match up with the top as well.
The tops and bottoms of the stands....I might be mistaken, but I don't think they're painted anymore. It seems to be some kind of vinyl adhered to the wood. It is VERY solid and looks great.
There are little improvements in the box like tops for the sand holes, etc. The packing is very detailed and really shows the quality that goes into these stands.
Highly recommended!

Follow Ups:
For LS3/5A, I highly preferred the Foundation Designer 1 (made in 80s) and 2 (current production). Or a pair of Gini system B+ bass stand to fill up the lower frequency for this lovely baby.
If you really want a quality stand you should of bought Sound Anchors out of Florida. They are much better built than Skylan. They also cost 50% more.
I'm using a pair of R1 Target stands, although I'd like something higher than the 21" that they are.
Do you know how they'd compare (Skylan vs. Target)?
And Sanus and other metal stands.
I by far prefer the Skylan construction and design. A hollow metal pipe is a bell. If you fill it with sand it's a damped bell.
Also Noel will build them to whatever height you want. Will make the top plate match you speaker exactly. That is a REALLY GOOD feature.

Damped Bell? I agree 100%. I had very nice Target stands. My Skylans are better.
