I came across a Tannoy 215 DMT II, it will cost me around 4k. As the shipping alone might cost $800. They are 200lb each....
I try to look up some review about this speaker, but no luck. After all, it is design for studio rather than home use. I am worry if my amp, Krell KSA-200S (200W), is a little weak, as the speaker recommend power is 150-800W at 8ohms. also, my listening area is 13x15 feet. is it too small for the speaker?
So I am wondering if anyone has experience with the Tannoy? Any input will be help. thanks a lot
I mostly listen to Classical, Jazz and pop.
Current equipment: Krell KSA-200S, BAT VK 30SE, W4S DAC2, Cayin CD-50 and a Tannoy Arden 15"

with 24 watts per channel SET power, or 200 watts solid state. Found in state-of-the-art recording studios where used for final-playback testing because of their beautiful bass, midrange and treble sonorities. I bought mine shielded -- new for $6,500. I would rather own these than, e.g., $100K Wilsons. But them and you'll never look back with regret, if you have listening space for them to breathe.
i just came across your message. your listening area is what???? are you aware of the shear size of these monsters? are you aware that they are for pro audio studios and considered as mains monitors? I would say in a listening area of 13 x 15 feet, you will have place for one armchair and when you switch them on they blow both of you thru the window
A friend owns a pair of them , so I've heard them many times . I wouldn't say there great but there are a good value for the $1500 he paid .
I enjoyed mine but only paid $1200 for them.
This speaker is for bigger rooms which is why the amplifier power recommendation is so high. In your room 50 watts would be more than enough. Depends more on the minimum impedance and they don't provide that that I saw.
I heard this speaker in South Korea and it is very very good in both just listening to it (not a studio) and it was stunning in a pub where the owner loves his music and was running a tube McIntosh - (the only good McIntosh I've ever heard) and it didn't have a ton of power and it filled a large room at high levels with solid bass. And the room acoustics were not great and they were not on a dedicated stand and they STILL sounded very good. I stayed in that bar longer than any other.
I don't know if $4k is a good price or not - I think if memory serves that it is a good price and that it retailed in the $12k-$16k range - but I can't remember. I do know that I was puzzled to see Tannoy drop it from their line-up.
It is a BIG loudspeaker so 13 X 15 might be overkill. The Tannoy Kensington SE I also very much liked and you may find it used cheaper and it might be more suited to the room. Still the 215 has Thunder.
I have never used them, but I have used their smaller brothers, DMT 12 II, and like them very much. If your room is only 13 x 15, I think you would do much better with one of the single driver systems. BTW, I think the 215 was designed to be soffit mounted.
Have you been to Harvey Rosenberg's old site? He was a big fan of the Tannoy paper coned DC speakers and wrote up some mods and suggestions.
