Robber,
Went through your review. Yes, the Quads image very nicely and the bass is astonishing for the small drivers. I feel that these speakers deserve mega-buck amps than, the ones you own or me. I feel that these speakers are very good bargains at $1300. I sometimes wonder, why so few people discuss about these speakers on the forums. But then again I think, that the owners of these speakers must be busy enjoying their music rather than visit these forums :-) Enjoy your music.
I have the electrical load curve for the old 21L and, comparing it with the 12L, it's easier to drive than the 12L. I have listened to them easily driven by a 30 WPC Sugden. I drive the 12Ls easily wih 25 WPC Quicksilvers. I have heard the new 12L2s twice - in 2 shops - they made them brighetr. Ugh
Greetings from the sunny Brønshøj riveria on the banks of the lovely Utterslev Mose
Robber, I've not yet heard the Quads. But after reading your engaging review, I will certainly be giving them a serious audition. Categorically, these small active monitors are remarkable, both for their sound quality, and value. What other active near fields have you heard?
Whoops . . . if I had read your review with more care, I would have seen that the Quads in question are in fact small floor standers. I discovered this when I did a Google search to see what they looked like. From the pictures, they appear to take up more or less the same volume and floor space as a pair of stand-mounted mini monitors, so the comparison is not entirely inapt.
Correct. The 12l will use same real estate with a decent pair of stands.
The active is a little different animal. It is a little more immediate sounding, not as unforgiving but ultimately probably more accurate.
I dont care anymore though. I listen to what sounds best to my ear and that is the 21l2 for now. (I still have my actives though!)

This last review was for the passive 21L2s. Are you referring to my review of the Atives I did a while back?
Interesting.
My point was only that 20-25 tube wpc did not float their boat. 40wpc SS did.
YMMV
