Hi,recieved my Skylan 4-posters for my Compact 7s as l posted earlier my room is small 11f x12f,do l fill the Skylans with sand or kitty litter,l would like the bass to be controlled as possible, finally has anybody filled the stands without the top plate or without the base plate,ie not building the stand then using the filling holes provided,it seems to me that it will take a while to fill them up using the filling holes, thanks for any help.
Follow Ups:
I just received my Harbeth Super HL5 custom Skylans with 4 posts two weeks ago. I had the speakers on Ikea wooden tables (per Alan Shaw's quirky recommendation from Harbeth forums) while waiting for the proper stands... although the sound was fine on these (Harbeths aren't too picky about stands) on the Skylans, it was as if I had been listening to flawed speakers before. The sound improved dramatically. The bass didn't boom or float away, became musical & sonorous. More surprising were the mid/treble response - it's as if the speakers' sound became finely honed. Worth every penny, in my book, especially considering they are significantly cheaper than Sound Anchors.
Noel from Skylan recommended kitty litter, so I used it. But you have to make sure to purchase the heavy, clay version, not the fancy, more expensive paper-based ones or crystal ones. The brand I used is Purina Tidy Cats or something, and I could see why Noel recommends these. Very heavy. Nicely sanitized & treated vs. moisture. I know some people get gourmet sand and bake in the oven. Power to those people, but frankly, I feel that's more for their peace of mind than a real performance translation. I'm completely happy with the results I got w/ kitty litter.
I filled the stands up after I built them, used filling holes. Yeah, it does take a bit of time, but it's not so bad. When they're filled near the top, continue to shake the stands side to side a bit, though, make the cat litter settle so you can pour in as much as you can. For mine, I used approximately 45 lbs or so?
Anyway, hope you enjoy your speaker/stand combo. As for me, I can't imagine listening to my Harbeths w/o Skylans.

I think what Skylan owners will soon discover is that they sound marginally different on different speakers and so have to be "tuned" a bit. Fill material, what you put between the speakers and the stands, whether you used spikes or the little hooded footers. Noel has said that designing stands that perform well for a wide variety of speakers is...well a bit of a challenge!
Glad you've had success with yours.
Thanks, Bob. All that you say about the Skylans in this thread are so on the money...

How much did those stands cost you? Now that the Canadian dollar is worth more than the U.S. dollar, the list price is REALLY expensive. I actually thought about ordering a pair of Skylan stands. But after seeing the prices at the exchange rate, I backed off.
If anything, I'd say Skylan stands are quite inexpensive for the quality you get, IMHO.
Actually, I think they're a bargain. What price are you being offered? If they're $225-$275, they're not making too much on them. I sell JMR Magic Stands for $400 and make next to nothing, which is why JMR stopped making them himself!

Okay, so it's $265 for what I would consider normal stands, the ones with two columns. I have a pair of these here to audition. I repeat, they are a screaming bargain for that price. The JMR Magic Stands do a bit more for JMR Duets in the midrange for $400, which for $400 they should. And they were designed specifically for JMR stand-mount speakers. So if you still think $265 is too much for stands, you need to hear what your speakers sound like on cheaper ones. That ought to settle it quick. Sad to say, I guess, every link in the audio chain matters.
$265 canadia dollar was a bargain when the exchange rate was $1 U.S. dollar = $1.5 Canadian dollar. What's the exchange rate right now? $1 U.S. dollar = $0.9 Canadian dollar?Plus shipping, this will push the final cost to over $300.
Which is still considerably less than Sound Anchors, I expect, and $100 less than Magic Stands. Good costs. And, relatively speaking, not all that much if it really IS good. And now I'll get off your case!
