i am looking at the JBL pswd 115 15" (400), Acoustic Research s300 12" (430), and the Energy xlS10 10" (370)
the prices arent that big of a deal, i am just looking for a nice powerful sub with good deep bass and that sounds good.
the jbl and energy say they go down to 25hz and the AR is 22hz...
i am not able to listen to these so please help me out.
I WILL refrase my post...
i have to option of getting AR s300, the cheaper AR 12", Energy 8,10,12" subs, cerwin vega and jbl lines...i narrowed it down to the AR s300(12"), Energy 10 and JBL 15" because of price(400)
i am looking for feeback on these not on others
thanks for helping though
Hi Luke,Of those, get the Energy for best "quality" bass: tightness, pitch definition, overall speed; or the JBL for sheer quantity of bass. I would get the cheaper of the two AR subs, but really I wouldn't get either AR, given the other choices. Also, I would stay away from the Cerwins.
Just my opinions on that..... BTW, why are you only considering those few subs? If you are mail-ordering (you say you can't audition them), there are tons of subs to be bought. Have you looked at soundpros and soundcity? They have quite large selections of subwoofers.
Also, it might help if you tell what main speakers the sub will be mated to, what the rest of your equipment is, what kind of music you listen to, how loud do you listen, if the sub will be used for HT applications as well as music, etc, etc.

forgot to ask this...
why do u think the AR s300 is not one i should look at?
the smaller AR has 10% thd at 120 watts according to crutchfield.
i am only considering those subs because i am mailordering and i can get a considearlble pricecut on them,
i have technic 3 way 12" down to somewhere around 40...(im beginning to think i might not even need a sub?)
i am looking for big bass, but i dont want it to sound like shit.
i ll be using it for HT some, and i listen to Rap, Hard rock and some classic rock.
Sony DB 830 recieverthanks
If you feel inclined, you can make a really nice DIY sub with parts from www.partsexpress.comThey have a "Titanic" speaker, two models of sub amps, and precut/prebuilt boxes. I don't need a sub now, but if I did, I might think about DIY.
RichardH
The Titanic is a good sub, but our own SV12 has a longer measure throw, a stiffer cone, and costs less.Mike D for ACI
Thanks for pointing that out, Mike. Luke, if you're still reading this thread and considered what I said in the DIY? post, definitely take Mike's suggestion and get the SV12 with amp for $305 at ACI. You could still use the box from partsexpress or make your own.RichardH
I'm still breaking in my VMPS Larger Sub but I'm quite pleased with it so far. I'm using it for HT/LFE as my mains go plenty low without it. VMPS has a few different sub designs, depending on your needs, and their design approach (mass loaded PR) makes them quite flexible IMO. Also not too pricey, especially in kit form.--Gregg
go to:
hsuresearch.com they make what is probably the best budget sub going.
if your doing Home Theater you are going to have to go with someone else's advice - i should not have butted in.if your doing 2 channel stereo - forget the sub and upgrade your mains - just my opinion - nothing more...
Dean,
but if thats the only way and you got $1000 - send away for the Klipsch LF-10'sDean,
Check out the Velodyne CT-100 in that price range. It would be great for both movies and music, as it is a 10", so it'll still be nice and "fast". I would stay away from the JBL and the AR, go towards companies like Energy (like you mentioned), Paradigm, HSU Research, PSB, etc.Anyway, definitely audtition the CT-100 (C City carries them).
RichardH
i was under the impression that the AR sub would be a good one,
can u tell me why it will be inferior to those u mentioned including the energy sub?
thanks
The AR would probably be better than the JBL, but for $400, I think the CT-100 is the one to get. In short, it will play louder and lower with less distortion. Since you can't audtition the others you mentioned, I would go with the Velo. They have an excellent reputation with subs, and I know people who are thrilled with the CT performance.RichardH
Subs can be tricky. Even the most expensive of them can fail to impress. What I would prefer is one that is quick and nimble instead of one that can shake the foundation. When you try to mate a "slow" sub with good quality speakers, you wreak havoc.
And don't think that because REL subs are expensive, they are good. I have only heard the Stadium II, but it is an overpriced HT sub in my opinion. This, however, is only my opinion.
With all that being said, I am still a fan of full range loudspeakers, or giving up the very last octave in favor of great performance elsewhere.
Again, only my opinion.

Check out the Carver before you buy, especially if price isn't a problem. Good hunting.
do u mean the AR (w/ carver amp)u think that is the best of the bunch?
No, I'm sure he means the smallest Carver (brand) sub, I think it lists for $800.
Check out McCauley. For Subwoofer applications they have a lot to offer.http://www.mccauley.com/mainframe.htm
12" - 18" VLF drivers. Some of the best in the world.
Just got a MBL 211(www.mbl-hifi.com). Its mated with my Acoustat 1+1's and works very well - fast, deep and clean. It retails for $2900 but I got one new from www.highendaudio.com for $1100 - awesome deal and sound.
