I need info on B&W DM 14. How old are these speakers -- how much did they cost new? Any info is welcome... I've bought them because of the wonderfull sound, the way they looked (beautiful :) !) But I do not know much about (these) speakers. Please someone.. help me out! Thanks, Abel.
I still have a pair of DM14's that I bought new in 1982. They are still excellent speakers. The sensitivity is 87db, they require a minimum of 15wpc and have no uppper power limit. These speakers have the APOC system (Audio Power Overload Circuit). This measures the amount of distortion coming into the speaker and shuts themselves down when the amp starts to clip. If you push your amp too far a little red light will turn on at the bottom of the speaker. Hopefully your amp is more than 15wpc. This is why they need a min. of 15wpc. B&W stopped using this system quite some time ago as it lowered the efficiency of the speaker amongst others. The cost at the time was $1000.00.
Shaun, thanks for the info. What do you exactly mean with: "B&W stopped using this system quite some time ago as it lowered the efficiency of the speaker amongst others."? Thanks, Abel.
They found that having the APOC circuit in the signal path lowered efficiency of the speaker and also caused some loss of detail. The main reason for this system was to prevent damage to the speaker. As long as you have an amp over 15wpc you will never have to worry about damaging the speakers.
Well...here's what my blue book saysB&W DM14: Produced from 78-84, new retail $1000/pr, current [1998] used retail $165/pr.
:-)
Steve
i got a pair of dm12s back in 1980 or so. i remember the dealer having the dm14s as well. like you say, great sound. still got my dm12s and they still sound good and no problems either. the dm12s evolved into the dm1200s. i don't know if the 14s were then discontinued or also updated. made me into a loyal b&w customer.
Thanks for the information Steve and Mango! I'm surprised by the price and how old they are... I stil wonder: does anyone have some information about
Sensitivity
Maximum output
Amplifier requirements
ImpedanceThanks, Abel.
