Does anyone own or have heard & have comment on the Wounded Bird version of Renaissance's CD Azure D'Or?I have the Warner/Sire (German)version of this CD and I feel it lacks the potential that the recording could be capable of. Is the newer Wounded Bird version remastered in any way that brings a little more life and sparkle to this recording? Is it worth getting over the Sire version?
I'd be interested in any comments.
Follow Ups:
I believe the Wounded Bird release is just a clone of the European CD. In fact I think they did the same thing with their Passport reissues - I was told they used the German CDs as masters.
I have the Japanese mini-cd HDCD version and it is superior to every other version of this album I have heard. I originally had a British CD version on the Thunderbolt label and it was terrible (although it sounded slightly better than the 1001 nights versions) I also have a Sire Records vinyl version but that is not too good either. The Japanese HDCD version is the way to go, but it is a little pricey and probably hard to find now.
I have the Renaissance BBC Sessions (live) on Wounded Bird and it's very good, IMHO.Azure D' Or isn't one my favorites either, but I know it can sound better than the German CD. Renaissance took a down turn at this point in their career (with Azure).
I wasn't aware of the Japanese HDCD mini LP CD as you have indicated. I'll have to keep my eyes and ears open for it.
Anyone else have comments on Wounded Bird CD issues or on the Japanese HDCD mini LP CD's?
Thanks
I've heard mixed things about Wounded Bird in general, but I can't comment on it specifically.Did you know that there's an HDCD Japanese mini LP CD of Azure d'Or? I only have "Azure" on vinyl and as it's not one of my fave Renaissance recordings, I passed on it. However, I do have the HDCD mini LP of "A Song for All Seasons" and it sounds amazing.
I know I didn't answer your question but if you are a fan of "Azure" you may want to look for the Japanese issue.
The Japanese HDCD Novella and Annie in Wonderland also sound terrific. Big improvement over the Warner/Pioneer Japanese releases from the early 90's.In fact, all the latest Japaneses releases of the other Renaissance albums (on the Toshiba and Arcangelo labels) are big steps up as well. The price was pretty steep though at about $30 a pop when they were available.
