We saw Richard Thompson (again) at the Colonial Theater in Bethlehem, NH last week. Live solo acoustic. Front row center in a very small venue.
We saw him there two years ago, too.
He was superb as always (and as expected). If you don't know his work, and/or you've never seen him live -- do yourselves a favor and do so.
Rock/folk guitar really just doesn't get much better.

Follow Ups:
One of the very few rock guitarists whose solos show not a trace of blues chord progressions, no 12 bar cliches.
In fact, nobody out there plays like he does, a unique voice.
A number of years ago a coworker was extolling the virtues of a hot new blues player - might have been Bonamasa. I shrugged and handed him Fairport's 25th anniversary CD. I told him to listen to Poor Will and Sloth and then get back to me. A few days later he plopped the CD on my desk and said:"I'm not ready for this, I didn't know you could do that with a guitar."
All I could do was laugh.
Occasionally I'll play back to back the 3 or 4 different live versions of poor will in my collection. The way RT solos on poor will is so different from virtually anyone else's playing and so astonishingly fitting to the song. One of the things about RT's playing is it is typically so fitting to the subject of the song.
As another example, listen to cavalry cross, the way the solos build to a crescendo and then taper back to a whisper.
RT is definitely my favorite electric guitarist.
Calvary Cross is one of my top RT songs. I've been playing the live version from Guitar/Vocal since it came out in the late '70's. That, Night Comes In, and When I get to the Border are probably my top 3 solo pieces. Poor Will and Sloth fill out the top 5.
and then some upon the first time hearing this version:

"Once this was all Black Plasma and Imagination" -Michael McClure
Best guitarist out of many of the great ones that I have seen.
RT's tone is like no one else's and his playing compares will the other greats.
I know he played a great show!
RT is amazing. I saw him several times, both solo acoustic and as the electric trio, on cayamo this past February.
