Surprised no one posted yet. This is one of my top 10 shows. Scar>Fire is so melodic it transports me. Donna doesn't even sound off key! The NFA, Dancin', and rest of set I do me too.
I'm more of a Pigpen guy but 5/8/77 has the noodling down. Not bluesy but a really good show!!
Follow Ups:
I am still working through 30 trips collection. I have no idea how I would pick a best since there are so many great shows that were recorded. We have a local gal that goes by Downtown Deb who does a dead radio show that is first rate. She hooked up with Owsley on the east coast. She moved to the bay area with him and became a secretary for the dead.
No kidding. And Euro 72.Worth it just for Pig Pen right there.
Just finish Estimated and I continued to be amazed by Betty's, on the fly, two track mixes. I done live two track mixes and it can be very challenging. I was always in the same room and used headphone, while Betty, at times had a separate room in the venue. But, regardless, IMO, this is her best effort and simply wonderful. Honestly, this mix blows away the Hampton 89 multitrack mix, which was a big sonic disappointment. I only point this out because it was mixed from multi track analog and pales to what Betty did live to two track. She is an incredibly gifted artist.
I received my vinyl copy yesterday and just starting listening to it. I went straight to "Dancin", which I really like. Late last night I did a quick comparison with the cd for this track and, although the vinyl sounds very good, I have to say, the cd sounded more like "master" tape.
Anyway, I hold out judgement until I have repeated listens.
At this moment, the boys are deep into the groovy Dancin jam and I'm liking it.
Nice stories- All.
I'm a long time dead head, caught the bug in the late 70s. My first show was 5 8 78, Syracuse. Started taping them in 1982, when I went to Jamaica to see them. I'm like a 2nd generation taper, as those that came before me set the table by lighting a fire under my ars and inspiring me to capture the Dead for listening pleasure. Although I've seen them over 125 times, that pales compared to others I know. My college buddy probably saw them 700 or more times.Man, do I have stories and many of them I think most would find a heck of a lot of fun. I was sober for most of my Dead experience. I just plain got off on the music. But occasionally, when the time was right, I filled my tank with high octane. I even had the privilege to have Bear patch out of me at one show in the 90 s. He wanted an audience recording because he said he found them to be more sonically interesting. He used a Sony D6, I was digital at the time.
I was pretty well connected with folks that had their hand in the vault, before any official releases started. And, knew folks that got first generation copies of Betty Boards when she unfortunately lost them to bidders on her storage unit. I remember doing 1 to 1 transfers for 36 hours trying to get as many of them as possible.
Anyway, Cornell 77 was one I quickly snatched up. It was around the mid early 90s. It was the first dbx transfer of the reel to reel masters. Prior to that, the board of that show was not dbx decoded and were sonically compromised. My copy became a first generation clone from the master reel to reel. If was the reference copy of the show until, I hope, this release. I've ordered the cd and vinyl. I can't wait to listen to them when they arrive.
I live in Ithaca, ny and went to the 5 8 77, release party at the State Theater. It was fun and they played Dancing through the rest of the show on a concert PA system. It certainly sounded different but that could be an improvement or it could be coloration from the pa. From folks I trust, they say it is an improvement. I'm itching to hear both the cd and vinyl.
IMO, is it the best show ever? Well, no, but it is damn good and I, frankly, couldn't tell you the best show ever. I do think the Dancing and Morning Dew are right up there. I like a Scarlet Fire but there is a point where Keith's piano is very repetitive and a bit annoying, but it is easy to hear past .
Anyway, there is also a book out now about the show and it is pretty interesting and actually weaves a historic perspective by using the show as a back drop but recognizing the greatest of the show, too. It is fun reading and highly recommended.

I just received my CD copy and did a quick comparison with my reference. So far, it sounds better, as if mine has a bit more haze and this one has more punch and more extention. The mastering seems to have eliminated some tape hiss, something I did to my remastering. They also seemed to have worked out some of the low rumble microphone noise problem at the beginning of the first set but some of it is still there. I am going to do an extraction to see how much compression was added. My ears tell me some but I'll have to take a look to see how much.
In all, it sounds good on first listen and I'm glad they patched Minglewood, too.
As I sit listening to scarlet fire transition I can't help but feel continually annoyed by Keith's repetative and non creative playing. Thank god the rest of the band is working. To me this is the only low point of an otherwise fantastic show.
My 5LP Cornell showed up a few days ago..., that I ordered 6 months ago.
My turntable is a bit discombobulated and haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. And the deadnet store's digital download is temporarily disconnected.
Doh!
I guess, for a little while at least, I'll be listening to my 25 year old CD I've lugged around all these years
I know this might be blasphemy by some.... Maybe a bit influenced by disco that was so prevalent at this time. I would describe this period and especially these shows as funky and rhythmic. It certainly has some raggae influence. The band as a whole has this wonderful thick, juicy, bouncy, full sound. A great period for The GD and one of my favorites.
Hey jefe - yes, I strongly agree with you!
Of course, Larry used to carry the Dead torch here and lots of us would happily chime in & sing along :). Somehow, without him, well ...- I still miss him.
I have this show in five different bootleg versions - the first two on cassette and the other three on CD. All sound reasonably good, a couple of them extremely good, but with a few sonic flaws. This official release sounds awesome! I had been concerned about how the tapes had been stored (as you may know, they were *not* in the Dead's possession until relatively recently). One of my boots was made from Betty's tape, long ago. I thought perhaps it might have an advantage. No. They've done an incredible job with this. The tapes must have been treated reasonably well through the years, and/or the efforts at sonic restoration have been wonderfully successful! This is just a joy to listen to, and it blows away all of my boots.
Best Dead show ever?? It's a silly question or claim. We all have our favorite band configurations and favorite tours. Spring of '77 *is* one of my favorite periods. I think it is arguably a great period, and 5/8/77 is a great show. I've introduced many people to the Dead using music of this period, as I think it is particularly accessible. But I don't see any good coming from debates about *the* best show. Better to simply ENJOY this great show - and look forward to more Betty Board releases to come :-)
When you mentioned LWR I had to chuckle. I still remember Dave's pick 12 and how fantastic that sounded to me. After I first spun it I sat in my chair and said to no one DAMN. Paid no mind until I was trolling here and LWR had posted on the sound quality of 12. I had to chime in as that pick just stood out in my system anyway. That Ms. Jackson sure can record.I was late to the Dead party but have done a lot of listening in the past few years. Making up for lost time and always enjoyed LWR's postings as I know he was an insider.
I do not know what it is with upstate NY and the Dead but a buddy who is a dedicated and long time CA dead head had a Buffalo NY war memorial 10 in reel to reel that was playing and it just slayed me. Do not know the year but what a rip.
Ordered this on cd and looking forward to the spin.
