When I was reviewing the Shunyata Taipan Helix, I mentioned Danny Wilson's debut album, Meet Danny Wilson. I'm not going to repeat myself, so check it out.
During the Spring 1987 quarter, the sophisti-pop of Meet Danny Wilson appealed to those in our high school band.
During the summer of 1987, the more accessible "Mary's Prayer" was one of those underground hits. As such, it wasn't meant for the masses. Rather, you enjoyed it with small numbers of your friends. And it was also perfectly fine for your female classmates to sing it freely.
Years later, some of us would become audiophiles. We never lost track of our musical roots. Which is why one wing of my audiophile friends constantly cites gems such as "Mary's Prayer" as examples of 1987 being "the best." I do not have that bias, but I can say that whenever I play "Mary's Prayer" for audiophiles, it brings smiles to their and their friends' and relatives' faces.
True-to-the-source audio products get out of the way, and leave you with the music. They make it plausible that we're high school sophomores, basking in that hot and dry Spring '87 weather. Time stood still. We were still kids. Hardly anyone had a boyfriend or girlfriend yet. But we didn't have any breakup angst, strain, drama, or pain. As we hopped up and down to "Mary's Prayer," we had a naivete, or ignorance of, the impending demands and responsibilities of junior year.
As the song comes to an end, we look at the calendar, which reads, "2017." Our brains struggle to do the subtraction, and we realize that 1987 was 30 (!) years ago. Yet, if you have musically faithful audio equipment, you shrug your shoulders, cross off the "20," and act and feel as though it were 1987.
