The usual advice I have seen is to match the levels at 100 Hz, 1 kHz, and 10 kHz. After all, if one can correct a frequency response difference with a touch of the tone controls, it hardly seems to be worth spending money on different cables.Actually, it does seem quite probable she could tell the difference, as BB has said. But since it was an uncontrolled SBT, we can't be sure that it was because she could see her husband work or something in the sound. It would seem appropriate to institute some controls and move on to a DBT.
