It's fun to do this without disabling WFP, but in practice I've found it easier to disable WFP - reason being you save time by not having to use safe mode each time you come in and out of minlogon - software installs, soundcard driver updates are best done from normal XP desktop, out of minlogon.
Easy Minlogon
1.Download this minlogon.cab file
You must have WinRAR or WinZip or similar extraction tool installed.
Right-click the minlogon.cab file and choose "Extract to minlogon/"
The minlogon.exe file is in the minlogon folder that appears.
2. Make a new text document and copy the following into it:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"Config"=dword:00000017
Save it as minlogon.reg to the desktop or another convenient directory (folder)
3. Do either a. or b.:
a. Without disabling WFP: Restart and repeatedly press F8 when booting to enter Safe Mode
b. Disable WFP: 2. Download xplite Launch it, select the Windows File Protection tab, click Disabled, and Apply.
4. In C:\WINDOWS\system32 rename winlogon.exe to winlogon.exe.bak
Copy the minlogon.exe into system32 folder and rename to winlogon.exe
5. Double-click minlogon.reg to create the new dword called Config with value 00000017 which allows minlogon to work.
Restart and you have implemented minlogon.
Follow Ups:
Well I did it
1. unpacked the cab, that I have downloaded. there were 3 files one of them is also a cab with 1 file - namely, minlogon, but of different size. didn't touch the cab and didn't unpack this file
2. renamed winlogon to winlogon.exe.bak and saved a copy in a different folder
3. copied minlogon.exe from the highier level cab to system32 folder and renamed
4. created text file, typed everything correctly, = was strange (too long)
saved as minlogon.reg (should I have renamed it to winlogon.reg?)
5. Double clicked - here confusion starts. Windows asked me if I really want to enter these values or smth. Yes I said. Nothing happened. I double clicked again. same question same answer. Third time same question I answered no. Placedthe file on my desktop. Rebooted - blue screen Fatal error and so on. WHAT TO DO NOW? Can I reboot from flash drive and restore my CMP or is it dead forever
HELP!!!
Serge.
steppe - sorry to hear about the problem. For next try this should help:
1. The minlogon.exe file is a 23.8kb file, right there in the folder after unpacking the minlogon.cab file - no second extraction is needed. Please ignore the "minlogon209170.cab" and "minlogon.inf" files that are there.
2. You should copy and paste the .reg file information, to avoid typing errors. Calling it minlogon.reg is a matter of convenience for us - as long as the contents are correct you could call it anything but it must end with the extension .reg You can check in regedit to see if the entry has gone in correctly: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon and there should be a line "Config" with the value 00000017
The tiniest mistake with minlogon fries Windows, so be very careful.
One thing that has occasionally saved my ass in this regard is having a multiple-boot setup - for some (not all) mistakes, you can get into the Windows system files for the damaged system and restore them.
I may have to change the title of my shortcut to Easy but bloody dangerous Minlogon!
Thanks for explanation. It seems that I typed everything well. I am usually carefull, especially because English is not my native. I have a boot dvd with every possible OS starting from Dos 4, which I still remember. I'll try to boot from it or to install Windows to a flash drive, hope 2 gb will suffice, and then try to rename winlogon.exe.bak to... and reboot again. If it works, I'll have a rescue flash drive by my side and will try to do everything again, but this time I will create text file beforehand. Also, does it matter how many times I double click the *.reg file and say Yes?
Serge
P.S. It's late now here, so I guess I'll go and sleep over it. A pity, b14 was so fine...
Check very carefully that a new winlogon.exe does not get put in system32 folder by Windows after you rename it to winlogon.exe.bak. When you double-click minlogon.reg it should ask you to confirm once, you click yes, and then it says it the registry has been changed. That should be it. If it keeps asking, something is wrong - maybe WFP is not really off. Check with regedit that the correct line has been added with the correct value. Bon chance!
not sure what you did wrong but when I had this problem (no boot up) I tried a windows repair and that did not work. So I reloaded windows from the original disc. When you get back up all your bios settings will be ok but your Windows settings will have to be re-done.
