I have been working with Peter trying different dll files for Vista. He got it working. Looks neat. As for the ultimate test, I have to wait untill Dr. Rankin performs the Silver Transformer transplant in my Crimson DAC.
More tomorrow. I'm tired!

The "resampler option" may have one, but as of now, to my knowledge, there is no means of using custom FIR filters.

Well after some more listening I'm sure for me that this XX player sounds better than the foobar I've put together :/. This is WinXP machine. I'm running foobar 8.3/asio 47a.7z, asio2k, as many components removed as i can (i don't even do album art/seek bar; as simple as can be) 16/44 into a nonoverupconverting Stello DAC vs XX Eng 1. My "Sound and Audio Devices" shows "No Audio Device" so I'm sure I've been bypassing Kmixer for foobar play and XX.The XX is the best player I've used in my system in terms of sound. Larger soundstage, everything fleshed out better/of a whole, low bass/bass/drums more impact better defined, everything highs on down more articulate....
My 11 year old daughter was brought in blind and sputtered words that tried to approach what I said above and also said "the loud parts seem more loud and the quiet parts seem more quiet"... which I'll take as better dynamics. When asked flatly what player did she prefer or was there no difference, she quickly responded there was a difference and she thought and chose XX as the better player.
This is all very frustrating because:
1) I can only get eng #1 to work and only if the wav file I'm playing is 64MB or < in size... ~ 6 min of music... a usb dac limit or something.2) I can't get eng 2 to work, because I don't know how to get my machine to recognize my Stello Dac as "Primary Sound Device". Everything I've read about eng 2 leads me to believe it would not be as good as eng 1 anyway... but eng 2 gets around 64MB wav limit.
3) No cue file support. All my music is ripped as single album wav with a cue file. To listen on XX I have to rerip to smaller song wavs.
4) I think just shy of $100 is a lot of money to be asking for a player and one that seems to be very much in development... I've bought into software before that was going to be developed ... but didn't. I would think that early adopter would get a good size price cut.
5) I'd prolly rush out and buy it and Vista and run XX on its eng 3 (made only for Vista)... but I'm still not sure it would work with my usbdac. Eng 3 only works with the Primary Sound Device and at least in WinXP I have not been able to have my Stello USBDAC be my Primary Sound Device.
Hope others will try it and give some feedback. I wouldn't keep on here except I'm afraid it sounds like a pretty decent step forward in music making to ignore.
Sev,
I think that is your problem with Foobar. You may be better off with KS. ASIO 2k is not real asio as far as I know, and actually makes the music path longer.
Can you compare Foobar with KS to the xx player?
Cool that you get the little ones involved in music early on!!
THanks for posting.
Kernal Streaming doesn't work with my Stello USB DAC. Has anyone gotton KS to work with a USB DAC? I like how Kernal Streaming sounded over other outputs on my non audio pc... just uses the onboard Realtek AC97, wish it would work with the usbdac.IDK, but does Kernal Streaming only work if you can make your audio device the "Primary Sound Device" ? Has anyone gotton KS to work outside their "primary sound device" but then does this inhibit getting around kmixer (head starts to swim)
Let us know how you like the silver transformers in the Crimson. I am enjoying music even more since I added the Crimson to my system.
Shakey,
I'll share my impressions of the unit after it is broken in.
The Crimson is wonderful!

I prefer it over Foobar, but I don't prefer it over Winamp. The big drawback right now is it can't play .aiff or .au formats.
I cannot hear much difference between Engine 1 and Engine 2, and it sounds worse with resampling turned on. I'm also not able to incorporate custom FIR filters like I can with Winamp via Adapt-X.
Hi Todd.
Would you please describe (or point to a source that will do so) your detailed Winamp setup?
Thanks,
Rupe
Latest Winamp, with DirectX, FFDSHOW, VID4WA 2.7a (not 2.6) plugin, Adapt-X DSP plugin with SourceForge Convolver component, in_aif plugin, in_au plugin, Shibatch mpg123 input plugin, ASIO4ALL, out_asio(dll) plugin v0.67 (be sure to use this exact version), out_fastwave (output for external USB DAC).The convolver FIR I use can be downloaded from here. I use the 32-bit floating version of this FIR function, with the attenuation set to -6.0 dB.
:)
Seriously, can I attempt to replicate your setup in less than 10 hours? I don't need anything to do with Apple formats.

WinXP here
Ok this gets me past the demo window and the player loads up on my front end computer for the audio sys. But when I try to play a wav file I get an error message (long win message that makes no sense to me, but i'd have to retype it here... maybe later). Maybe has something to do that I use a single wav and cue for an entire cd and player having trouble with that?... i'll try to make/find a small wav file heh.btw... The player does not support cue files, (as of yet or never idk). So I've tried to have it play a single big wav file representing a whole cd of songs... but it's not working. Tried on two different albums
edit
yea music abounds with smaller individual song wav files :/ ... Pls support large wav/cue file later... plsWould more than my 512k of ram help? I can go up to 2 gig. But haven't felt the need till ... maybe... n ow.
It's late. But first thoughts with some loud electronic type music is that I like this XX player very much. I used the same individual songs wav files for both players. I played the Orbital - All Together album, only one I've ripped to multi-wav so far since XX won't play cue/wav (single big wav of whole album). No digital vol control in foobar path and no vol as far as i can see in XX. Before I comment, the XX seemed to play back louder? Maybe why I thought it sounded so good :)... im not yanking out the spl tonight. Just a quick post that The sound stage changed, expanded forward, kept same good depth. Music a bit more whole sounding and 3d.. nice defined bass different than/beat? foobar in quick back and forth. And best...I think I relaxed a bit more with XX.. took an edge off? Almost like getting a xover aligned better. dammit i'ma listen again later and i may take this all back... i hate making snap judgementsIf I do like XX better ... i sure hope it supports cue/wav files later... dang 1400 or more wav/cue files to rerip to multi-wav... say it ain't so.
I've found myself reripping 5 discs now into multi song wavs ... to hear them on this XX player. sigh this could get dangerously time consuming and double my inventory on the hard drives,.. hehe I still like what I hear... prolly not enough to rerip everything (im reripping using the cue/wav file i created so not a cd disk rip... goes pretty fast using daemon tools &EAC at > 20X speed... still...) If I keep thinking it's worth it I might move toward more ram and change to Vista. But this player still needs cue file support.
Good oberservations!
Excatly what you're describing are the improvements you'll face, when getting rid of all the upstream mess if you start tweaking the PC seriously.
much more details, greater 3D effects, lots of air between the instruments, lower distortions, asf.
2 Gig of RAM should be seriously considered if running XX, Vista and other multimedia stuff anyhow. Go for it.
Cheers
Well...
I suspected (didn't someone confirm that the whole wav file goes into ram/memory?) that XX wasn't playing because my single album wav files (normally played with a cue file) might be too big. So I created a multi wav file album from Orbital - The Altogether... If it sounds good I'm also in the mood for some Wicked Tinkers... I'll have to rerip that too :/ (I sure hope he can make it work for cue/wav files)
AND
Those smaller wav files play ... hmm no I haven't but given it the briefest of listens before running into here to post about it hehe. But i doubt the player will be so good I want to rerip my collection into multi wav albums. It's late, I shouldn't be up, and I've already listened for more than a couple hours tonight to the system... but i'll give it a couple songs right now.I'm running WinXP and only 512 of ram on the front end laptop... I could get another gig and a half and throw it in there if that would help... but maybe i misunderstand what's going on.
K I found reasons why I was having difficulty. These aspects of my Front End computer held me up: my OS is WinXP; I'm running a USB DAC; and my USB DAC is not my primary sound card. There are 3 "engines" to choose from in XXHE.
From the XXHE help file about the first engine it says "Over USB drivers, allows a maximum of 64MB tracks only" So, I can only run engine #1 if my wav files are 64MB or less. That's why my whole album single wav/cue files won't work with engine #1, but splitting them up into individual song wav files does... as long as the song isn't over 64MB.
This is the only engine I've been able to listen to.Engine #2 also works with XP and gets around the 64MB limit, but only works with Primary Sound Driver. My USB DAC is not my Primary Sound Driver and so I can't use Engine #2. (Anyone know how I can change my sound card priorities to make my USB DAC the Primary Sound Driver?) Even if I could make this engine #2 work, I may not have enough ram to play my whole album single wav files... idk [i have 512k of ram... i can have up to 2 gigs of ram]
edit
Figured out how to make the USB DAC my Primary Sound Driver ... but that's by going into Sound and Audio Devices and putting Kmixer, well, back in the mix. In his help file for Engine #2 it reads "Needs proper tweaking OS of settings, in order for KMIxer does not interfere (resamples). " So I'll need to look into those tweaks since I've reversed the way I got around kmixer in foobar.
Engine #3 still uses Primary Sound Driver only and only works with Vista. My laptop is running WinXP... but I'd still run into my USB DAC not being the PRimary Sound Driver even if I picked up Vista. From all I've read, this Player is a work in progress... so all these "constraints" might change... i hope so.
What did you do to get that far?
installed the latest d version
