Today I did some extended listening with Vista and the ole Wavelength Crimson USB DAC.Straight Vista was definitely clearer than XP, but was somewhat bright sounding. I did notice that Vista has a new USB driver. Using ASIO2KS and the latest Foobar or J. River 12, things were considerably better. Too bad the Vista ASIO-USB driver isn't out yet.
The big surprise of the day was when I used WMP11 and the Burwen Bobcat on setting 3. This combination was simply stunning.
Those of you that have the Bobcat should definitely move to Vista.
Tomorrow I'll compare the Mac/iTunes against the WMP11/Bobcat.

Hello I run Vista as well. I found that the ASIO freeware drivers aren't needed. The Vista USB audio driver takes exclusive control. From what I can tell the ASIO freeware drivers are disconnected when playing Foobar or Winamp by way DS:USB output through Vista. Not sure but it looks like the Vista does the direct thing all by itself. The generic ASIOs do not have any effect accept giving you a remote control of the buffer settings and such.I agree it is EXTREMELY clear. The recordings that are recorded well sound AWESOME. The ones that are not sound worse!lol I have no experience with Bobcat. Sounds like a nice DSP to try.
I'm waiting to get the updated Vista ASIO-USB driver(since I already paid for the XP version). I would also like to hear if it changes the sound any. I'm not sure if it can get more direct than it already is though.
I think you are going through the Vista mixer unless you use ASIO or your media program runs exclusive. I will need help from more knowledgeable inmates on this subject.
How I came to my conclusions was by checking the statis of ASIO4all. When I have music playing through Foobar, the ASIO4all shows beyond logic for the given port. It also shows the port being used by the USB DAC 2x32-48Hz.. No other PC audio comes through the DAC. There's an option in the sound device menu that gives exclusive control to the USB DAC.Only if you use the onboard soundcard are you going through the mixer.
Well, if this is "straight through" then I am running out of the room screaming. This is not high end audio. I can't refute what you are saying, but it just doesn't seem right.
lol...If you're running from the room. Than somethings not right.lolI had to laugh...sorry. What are you using as the audio player Foobar or WMP ?
Do you have DS:Speakers(USB DAC)selected in your Foobar output devices?
