I have 2,652 albums on the server which take up 832GB, probably 90% are wav files, FLAC would be smaller. Buy two 1 or 2TB drives, maybe one SSD and the other a spinner. A 2TB spinner is no more than $80.
You want two to have a backup. Then get another for the safe.

Thanks. That is good to know.
Besides access speed and speed, any other difference between a 'spinner' and a SSD?
Use the SSD for trips and a cheaper spinner to use as a backup or master to copy to the SSD. Whatever, you have two copies.
Speed isn't an issue, an SSD is more robust for dropping and may longer.

Would you first rip it on to the laptop and and then transfer it over to an external HD? Or would you rip it directly on to an external HD?
If you have enough space on your laptop to rip all your CDs, then do that. It's simpler. Otherwise, rip to an external and copy the data periodically to a backup external HD.

.
which can be helpful for battery powered mobile solutions.
As you know, a spinner (HDD) is an electro-mechanical device that is more prone to damage if not handled properly especially while it's turned ON and spinning. As for speed, HDDs are perfectly fine for audio applications.SSDs are more rugged as they have no moving parts and they're faster but they cost more. They're also 100% quiet (no moving parts).
Budget and your capacity requirements will dictate which type you go with. And remember to get at least a second one for backup. [Or you can get one HDD and one SSD. Mix and match is fine]
If you go with spinning HDDs, I would look toward the smaller portable 2.5" external drives rather than the physically larger 3.5" units. The 2.5" drives are obviously more portable and they're quieter compared to 3.5" drives.
Good luck!
