Roon is my music player of choice at home but I'm wondering about portable setups using something other than LMS / piCorePlayer.
I have a few very basic questions about Volumio:
- Once installed and set up on the Raspberry Pi (presumably with an attached LCD monitor, keyboard and mouse), can Volumio be run on a completely headless Raspberry Pi hidden out of sight?
- I understand that Volumio can have its music library on a NAS. How about having the music library on a SD card or USB thumb drive directly attached to the Raspberry Pi? I assume this is possible but I've never actually played with Volumio.
- Assuming that the Volumio Raspberry Pi is on a home Wifi network, can it be controlled with an iPad? Does the network need to be on the internet? I ask because some software like Roon authenticates your credentials over the internet and that's also where it gets its meta data. I wouldn't need or want that in a completely portable setup.
- How's the control App on the iPad (or other tablet) for managing the music library and playback for Volumio?
I would explore LMS / piCorePlayer a bit more but I have yet to find a decent control App to manage playback from my iPad.
Follow Ups:
You should go the Volumio website as some of the questions are already answered.
Yes, many questions answered there but not based on actual user experience and possible glitches and bugs. Was just looking for inmates with actual hands-on experience.
I am using PiCorePlayer, on a Rpi3 and a piano hat dac. My music files are on my hard/drive PC in a shared folder. LMS settings finds that shared folder and there are some playlists too. I recently adopted iPeng loaded on an old iPad, not knowing much about it. However, at first it found the database easily and artwork migrated there. I just used it as a controller. But eventually I started to use it's more sophisticated capabilities, and you can easily make up a playlist, and if you like that, you can SAVE it, and use it again. Now, selecting pieces for playlists is something you learn to use. But I would not describe it as difficult. Honestly, I really like the LMS / Picoreplayer setup. and after nearly 2 years of improving it, reloading new versions, I will not use anything else. I think maybe the next step for me will be to mount the database on a 2 terrabyte memory stick. See if I can get that to work. I have to say that people here in AA have been very helpful in making suggestions and patiently replying to queries at regular intervals. Cheers
Hola Abe,

YES
- I understand that Volumio can have its music library on a NAS. How about having the music library on a SD card or USB thumb drive directly attached to the Raspberry Pi? I assume this is possible but I've never actually played with Volumio.
I use mine on a NAS, but I have used it in the past on a external USB drive plugged directly into the pi.

I ask because some software like Roon authenticates your credentials over the internet and that's also where it gets its meta data. I wouldn't need or want that in a completely portable setup.
I control mine from my iPhone and iPad, I use the Volumio app. Yes it can run just on the local network using music from a local source, ie my NAS. Obviously internet radio and such requires the internet.
- How's the control App on the iPad (or other tablet) for managing the music library and playback for Volumio?
You can use the App or browser, I like the GUI myself.
I would explore LMS / piCorePlayer a bit more but I have yet to find a decent control App to manage playback from my iPad.
I don't know about this.
Some others have had issues with Volumio but for me it is rock solid for what I need. I have tried a few others but this has always been my favorite.
Thanks for the good feedback Aaron! I may have to give it a try.
Be aware that Volumio will charge you an annual fee for interface to Qobuz or Tidal.... Not sure if they charge for Roon or not?
- "Once installed and set up on the Raspberry Pi (presumably with an attached LCD monitor, keyboard and mouse), can Volumio be run on a completely headless Raspberry Pi hidden out of sight?"
That's what I do.

I use it in DLNA mode to get Audirvana to the Pi so I control the music with Audirvana on my phone. Maybe do the same thing with ROON and just use Volumio to get ROON to the P1?
... No music at this point.Yes, Volumio will run headless, if fact I could not get at the GUI except with a web browser on my Win computer. I installed an Android app but haven't tried it yet. Presumably there is an iPad app.
It was a regal pain trying to "mount" my Synology NAS Music folder. I finally got it mounted as a 'Network' Source after enabling NFS and creating an NFS permission on the NAS ...
However nothing appears in my Volumio Music Library. Clues, anybody, anybody ??

I will likely have to rely heavily on Cut-Throat's expertise.

I can help you if you want to set up PiCorePlayer.... It is more complex to Set up, as it does so much more.... Usually less than an hour on the phone with me.
I have set it up for people that just want to play music and know nothing about computers, networks, or audio and it has played flawlessly for them for years. -- It is very stable.
... I can't get LMS to see any subdirectories or files on my Synology NAS. It does access and scan a USB flash drive I attached.Apparently it does mount my music directory, (/volume1/Music), if I use NFS vers=3, however it doesn't show any subdirectories. Trying to rescan doesn't help.
As you can imagine, it's unless I access my NAS music. The problem looks sort of similar to the one I was having with Volumio
BTW, there is a very good instruction video on YouTube that I've linked below.

BTW, If you meant Useless instead of unless, I can tell you that I access my NAS Music Library on my Synology Drive with no problems. Did it take me awhile of putzing to arrive at the correct parameter? Why yes it did.
You've been at this Raspberry thing for less than 24 hours and you are sounding like you want to 'Throw in the Towel'. This is with 2 different pieces of Music Streamer software.
Here is my Link Parameters to my Synology NAS in LMS.
LMS will browse to MusicNAS2 but sees no subdirectories and won't accept it as a Music Folder.

So 'Music' is the Name of your Shared Folder on your NAS? Tip - Open File Station on your NAS and your Shared Folder containing your Music Library should be listed there on the Left Panel of the Screen.

Here is mine... Also, include a Picture of your File Station of your NAS

Your Shared Folder is baileynas01.
Try that one! -- Computers are Fussy about things like that.
New pic. I would have thought that my 'baileynas01' was analogous to your 'KDB-4-Bay' (?)

Well, it appears that you don't have any shared folders on your NAS at all... You need to create a Shared Folder and them move all of these local folders to it first. To verify go to Control Panel of your NAS> Shared Folders and show me what's there... I'm guessing Nothing.
Here is Mine....

Seem to be the same sort as yours (?)
Dmitri Shostakovich
Except they are ALL shared Folders. You have No LOCAL Folders. You need to go to File Station and Create a Local Folder under one of the Shared Folders, called 'Music Library' or something to your liking and then copy all of the Music Artist Folders to there... I assume that your Music Library is organized by Artist> Album> Track...
So in My Case My NAS is named KDB-4-Bay> Shared Folder of DataArea> Local Folder of Music Library> Then all Music Organized by Artist> Album> Tracks

So what I tried was specify a mount for one of them, 'Classical'. It still doesn't work. (Actually I tried this earlier too; didn't work.)

Then there is something else screwed up with the Mount Parameters, because PCP is not finding it... It is only displaying the name you called it. It is not 'Navigating to anything' to your NAS currently... So double check your Login Password, IP address etc. something is wrong for sure, otherwise it will show up. Maybe the same problem you had with Volumio.
BTW - You will eventually need One Local Music Library Folder with all of your Groupings in it, so that it PCP can find them all.
Your help has been tremendous and I appreciate it very much.
Gotta say at one point I thought I had the problem licked -- a couple of times I had mistakenly entered my router's URL instead of the Nas'. I fixed that but things still didn't work.
Dmitri Shostakovich
By URL do you mean IP Address? --- You want to enter the IP address of the NAS on your Internal Network. To me it looks like you have the Router's IP address in there instead of the NAS -- 10.0.0.1
So, I'm pretty sure that 10.0.0.1 is NOT the IP address of your NAS.... Do you know how to find it?
Edits: 04/12/21 04/12/21
My NAS IP Address in 10.0.0.89. I mistakenly entered 10.0.0.1, my router's address, but I corrected that.
Dmitri Shostakovich
But, when did you correct it? -- So, you need to review all of your parameters there and make sure that they are all correct. Shared Folder, Login Name, Password etc. - And as it says in the documentation." Password must be re-entered for change in mount."

Humm ... well piCorePlayer + LMS does seem to have more potential than Volumio, and I'm willing to hack on to get it to work.
For a start maybe I try the CIFS share type once again with the options you are using, i.e. uid=1001,gid=50, (whatever it is they do).
Dmitri Shostakovich
Yes to all I think. You can definitely run headless and from a usb drive attached to the rpi. Haven't tried iPad, but iPhone and android work as controllers. Interface is not bad. Search depends on how well your files are tagged.
Only problem I have with Volumio is that it sometimes loses the wifi connection.
Can't help you much on Volumio. I tried it a few times and it was buggy as hell. The last time I could not get Qobuz to work... Volumio called me a month later and told me that they 'fixed the bug'.But, I agree with you on the iPad App for LMS. There is only one app as far as I know called iPeng.... I own it and train people on it with the iPhone I have. But it is basically a piece of shit. It is sorely lacking compared to the Andros Apps 'Squeeze CTRL' and 'Orange Squeeze' that I also own and use.
Edits: 04/11/21
I've tried the android apps briefly, but I've never spent much time on android.
I don't understand the reaction to iPeng. Where do the android apps do better?
I usually use Material Skin on my laptop and desktop (in Chrome) or iPeng on my phone.
I've been happy using iPeng for years on pad, phone and watch!
When I first switched to Raspberry Pi players I experimented with Volumio as well as several other music OS options. I found Volumio a visually attractive program but could never get it to reliably scan my music collection. It failed to do so repeatedly and was painfully slow while trying to scan. I ended up going back to LMS with Picoreplayer on one RPi and the HiFiBerry OS on the other units.
I've only used Volumio briefly, but I think the answer to all your questions is yes, except I don't know about putting music files on the SD Card, I've never tried to do that.
As for controlling LMS, have you tried iPeng or using the Material Skin plugin and a mobile browser (e.g. Safari)?
Back when I had a dedicated LMS server I used Squeezepad as the controller. It worked fine for me. I'm looking to set up a new LMS server on an RP4. Any reason not to keep using Squeezepad?
I recall struggling to use iPeng as it wasn't very intuitive to me and seemed a little disjointed or convoluted??? I may be spoiled by other players and remote apps ;-)
But if I decide to explore iPeng again I know I can count on some help from folks here including Cut-Throat
