I'm still using my mid 2010 Mac Mini as the server in my main system. I upgraded to 8GB of RAM and an internal SS drive (with an external drive for my music) some years ago and it still works fine. High Sierra is the last OS software it's capable of running though so when I have to upgrade the OS software in my 2015 Macbook Pro beyond that I'll probably have to look for something else to replace the Mini. I've had problems controlling the Mini with the MB when the OSs were different.
Don't have any idea what I'll get though. I'm leery of proprietary gear from small companies and I want something plug and play. Not something like a RPi that takes work to setup and maintain, even if the price is very appealing.
