perhaps I shouldn't be posting this here but...
Replaced the long cheap cable on my $12 Jameco/Shameco 5V somewhat linear PS with a one meter hunk of CANARE Star Quad 4S6.
How good is it?
Who knows?
Seems about the same as the $50 ifI iPower switching supply it replaced, which is was NOT before the cable change.
Follow Ups:
.
Didn't try to crack the case once I realized I'd have to figure out a way to put it back together securely.
We got cats!
Just clipped the cord at the case and soldered on the Canare Star Quad and covered my mess with shrink tubing.
OK, not ideal and NOT very pretty, but I'll not be posting posting picture and enduring the ridicule, so I guess that's OK.
What did you do at the barrel plug end ?
This is the same part that John Swenson used when he built the cable for his LPS-1 Ultracap supply as reported on Computer Audiophile.
He was traveling and didn't have a soldering iron handy, I think.

How much filter capacitance is found and whether or not it could be increased in that case.
I doubt it comes anywhere close to the 60 farad stiffness of the Uptone LPS-1 which may account for a different sensitivity to the lower inductance of the star quad cable.
At any rate, the Jameco does pretty well for $15!
OK, perhaps I'm not seeing (hearing) a WORLD of difference here, just thought that the iFI iPower $50 wall wart was a bit better than the $12 Jameco with the stock cheap cable.
With the new Star Quad cable (1 meter) instead of the nearly 6 foot thin wire, the Jameco seems to equal the iFI.
Seem to recall that John Swenson heard a big difference with the Star Quad cable compared to the stock cable on the Uptone Ultracap LPS1?
Have a friend who went for an aftermarket cable for the LPS1 as well and said it made a HUGE difference, and that he wasn't at all impressed with the LPS-1 until he went with a rather expensive aftermarket DC cable.
Eventually, I'll likely go with a uRendu and LPS-1, that's if I stay with LMS for my living room DAC/Headphone amp station. Then move the Pi to the bedroom.
Another confounding factor is that I have a new headphone (Kennerton Vali) in the system which is quite a nice upgrade from my old reference, 10 year old Senn HD-600. Too many changes at once can confuse there old ears.
It was following Swenson's report that I did the same thing and likewise found a nice improvement in dynamics replacing the original 18" cable with an equal length of star quad.
Why isn't this a OK place for Raspberry Pi audio posts?
Where else is Raspberry Pi audio discussed?

A month ago (if you look down the page) about every third new thread was a Raspberry Pi thread.
But no more. Everyone has moved on to other things.
Late to the party as ever, I finally got around to upgrading the cable on the Jameco PS for my Pi, but sadly the moment seems to have passed. :-(
Well, I was just asking to get more information.
I don't have an immediate need for a Raspberry Pi based audio component but I enjoyed reading those DIY-like threads. (Until some of them dissolved into bickering.)

I'm not to smart but what is the Raspberry Pi forum now? Did Fmak have a fit and twang his magic twanger and revolutionize the forum?

What with a few of us deciding to built the Raspberry Pi with HiFi Berry Digi+ as a Squeeze Box Touch replacement.
Lasted a couple weeks and not a Raspberry Pi post seen for weeks now.
Latest audio fad over quickly.
Fortunately, at least in this case, a cheap one.
Just listening to mine..... No problems, No Tweaks, No upgrades....

I'm just glad that the USB cable butchering fad is over !!
Good suggestion to upgrade those. I'm trying to make all my future purchases include their own power supplies from AC as much as possible. It's usually the tiny stuff, though, that an outboard supply is hard to avoid.
and as it's a $12 supply the risk is very low. Before the cord change I really think the $50 iFI iPower switcher had it all over the Jameco $12 transformer LPS.
Not sure that's the case now.
All for about $2 worth of Star Quad cable and a $.50 screw-on connector.
Wonder if the iFI iPower would sound better with a cable upgrade as well?

Just $52.50 to find out. =)
hey Ivan,
are you still using that LMS distro?
If so how is the youtube plugin? I've been searching for an easy way to play the live concerts and rare material of youtube on my system in an easy to use interface.
Huh?
I can watch YouTube Vids on a Raspberry Pi?
How so?
I think someone mentioned you can listen to the youtube clips on the LMS distro with a plugin, just wondering if you tried it.
Wouldn't know how to do that even if i wanted to.
I usually don't do the YouTube thing for music, although there is a TON of classical stuff on there I'm sure I would like.
In the old days, it was pretty crappy audio-wise but maybe it's getting better?
There are a few LMS wizzards here (I am not one of them), perhaps they will chime in?
I'm not.
