I've used iTunes for years. On my laptop, phone, and iPad. I've never bought a single piece of music from Apple.
And yes there are apps you can buy to make FLAC work right?
Nothing will be all things to all people. Never. Remember that we are the outliers here. But yet we can still make the hardware and software do much of what we want.
I consider that progress.
Follow Ups:
Have you considered that iTunes is an inferior product sonically?
It clearly is. And the fact it does not support all legitimate containers and formats makes it, well, useless. It is worth exactly what it cost.
So if you were reviewing a Ford Taurus you would say "Well its not as fast as a Ferrari"?
Of course it doesn't sound as good as other pieces of software. For most people it was the first thing that worked easily and it could be made to sound pretty dang good. 99% of people don't give a flying flip, but you think Apple should apologize?
But if you want to yell at little kids to not play in your yard be my guest.

Actually it is not like that all. I actually think iTunes is fine for portable Apple devices.
But we should not pretend is is designed strictly for convenience.
I couldn't disagree any more firmly with that assertion. Sure, everyone is looking to make a buck, pound, or euro.
It was Apple that pioneered the ability to instantly download any - any piece of music you just heard and be able to enjoy it within minutes. No trips to the music store to find the CD. No waiting for Azon to deliver the media.
Instant gratification. What's not to like about that?
I am grateful for their contribution in shaping the expectation of the current audience. I'm all about being able to download a FLAC recording via any number of channels - from HDTracks to small artist collectives.
Instant gratification, with 128 AAC?
McDonald's provides dope to the masses too..and a bellyache.
But then again this is coming from some one who thought the Squeezbox
was state of the art until a year ago.

Your assertion is not supported by facts. Such is obvious because you failed to quote anything I've actually posted.
Best of luck to you in your delusion. :)
It's also pretty clear that Apple pioneered pay per track downloads rather than being forced to buy an entire album. Not that it matters much to me but Apple dropped 128Kbps AAC ten years ago for 256kbps AAC. Whether we as audiophiles like it or not, 256Kbps AAC sounds pretty darn good for typical Joe Public with earbuds and Apple is under no obligation to cater to a small niche of audiophiles for downloads or streaming.
While it's nice that iOS and possibly iTunes will support FLAC, it's not that newsworthy IMHO because it is so simple to batch convert FLAC to ALAC (with no loss in quality). And some popular music download sites provide ALAC & AIFF downloads along side FLAC.
Yawn, but mention Apple at all and some folks love to go ape shit crazy with hate. ;-)

Isaak's perverted concept of reality. Not much of a surprise.
Do you recall his hilarious perception of the amount of high resolution content available in the market? :)
.
I'd say you should stick to disparaging MQA on Digital Asylum and leave Apple to those of us with a clue. ;-)
I'm going to guess you have never been up to Cupertino and sat in front of the brain trust of Apple and have them tell you that audio is not priority. In fact, not only a priority, but that 256 AAC is good enough.
Yeh, didn't think so .
Who?
I have no comment to make about what you can do using third party applications to get around limitations imposed by Apple as my points are abour Apple per se. Those apps are not official Apple developments.
Ultimately Apple is only interested in you buying from Apple Music. The link is to Apple's preview of iOS 11. Is there anything there about music other than Apple Music?
