To be honest I've rolled my own dozens of times, on the Rpi, Beaglebone and of course normal computers.
For the most part I think it's just part bring lazy and part wanting to try other people's stuff.
Like with cooking, if you know how to cook, home food is the best. My pasta sauce and burgers beat anything I can buy ready made, but from time to time I still but fast food.

That's IMO nonsense.
No matter at what Linux distro you look at.
It all boils down to a kernel, squeezelite and some minor configs.
Yes I rolled my own in the past.
Yes kernel modifications and other tweaks are beneficial to all distros.
However unlike yourself I still think it's fun to use ready made stuff.

I feel like making my own player app would be more analogous to making my own sushi. I'm leaving it to the experts.
Nah, not making the app itself, just the working parts. Basically installing the base system, ALSA, networking and squeezelite.
Dietpi does this without all the typing etc.
