I recently ordered a thunderbolt 2 compatible docking station for my 2012 MacBook Pro for the DMI, USB and TB2 outputs on the docking station. However, the retailer sent me a USB C device and, after talking with them, they didn't know the difference.
Can anyone tell me if I can plug a Thunderbolt 3 into my Thunderbolt 2 slot in my Mac and get a thunderbolt 2 signal through it to pass onto the doc. I'vs searched around quite a bit and I can't be sure that any vendor knows what they are selling when it comes to TB, as I have seen several different connectors advertised as TB 2 and they don't appear to be.
Thanks
Follow Ups:
Does the docking station device that the merchant sold you have a thunderbolt logo on it? USB-C does not necessarily carry thunderbolt signals, but it can.
You would be better off with a Thunderbolt 2 docking station, that has a Thunderbolt 2 style connector (mini display port) for the laptop end.
Otherwise, you can probably use a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter, but of course this assumes that your docking station supports Thunderbolt 3 in the first place, and not just USB-C on the laptop end. The adapters are bi-directional and available from Apple and other sources.
No, no compatibility. Even the Mac stores in Denmark have no idea. It's hopeless. Thanks anyway Abe.
Makes you wonder.
