I am as obsessed with the minute details of the sound emanating from my main system as the next guy here (and some would probably say TOO obsessed). However, I'm relatively indifferent to the quality of mobile sound, above certain threshold of course. For me, that threshold lies at 192 Kbps MP3 files, played back on diminutive Cowon U5 player through Shure SHR440 headphones. Granted, I listen on the train, where noise level is pretty high - but I don't feel handicapped in any way.
The cost of that playback chain is about $150.
Anyone feels the same way?

I've had this inner debate with myself as well. At the end of the day, better is better, so it becomes a matter of budget, and convenience. I have a HiFiman 801, which is large, and has limited storage capacity, but does accept sd cards. it sounds extremely good, and also functions as a usb dac and improves the sound of my laptop via jriver.
i also have a Cowon x7 with a 160 gig HD, insanely long battery life, and quite good drive for most in ear and regular headphones (it drove LCD-2's but i would not really want to listen to it or them that way!
So, it really comes down to how much usic you want to carry with you, the level of sonic performance you seek, and whether you want to be subjected to cavity searches when travelling :)

Out for a brisk walk...Brainwavz B2 plugged into my iphone (lossless) is great. In my car, losless files on my ipod classic are wonderful. Sitting in another hotel room, on the porch, somewhere where my home stereo can't go...the dac in my Fostex HP-P1 is really shockingly good. It's hooked up to an ipd for goodness sakes and it maybe better than my multithousand dollar home dac.
I use Etymotic In Ear headphones that cut out a huge amount of outside noise - on planes, trains, buses, walking near traffic, or in bed (wife can't hear the music).
The quality of sound is thus relatively unaffected by the outside environment, leaving me to still appreciate the best sound possible from Ipod > Headamp > Etymotic. I always use 44.1khz wav files, even though it reduces the number of albums that can be held on the Ipod.
I have tried, but am easily irritated by low resolution MP3 files.
Next step is a mobile dac/headamp with Ipod or Android as the digital source - just waiting for a couple of new products to be launched (haven't liked the options available to date).
Everybody reacts differently, but for me higher resolution mobile capability is essential for better enjoyment of music.

I much prefer my Korg MR1 to an iPOD on a plane, even with normal earphones.
I've brought my laptop, portable DAC, and high-quality headphones with me on trips many times, and this works out really well. Can't take listening on planes, however--just too noisy...

...I do use Apple Lossless compression for the iPod Classic in my car as I can plainly hear the difference compared 256kbps AAC, in the car setup.
For the few tunes that I have on my iPhone , for use with headphones when I travel, I just use 256kbps AAC and it sounds very good and enjoyable. I can't see carrying extra gadgets like an outboard DAC / headphone amp, and more cables for portable use.

192 kbps MP3 is about where I draw the line. Anything below that is unlistenable, and I have stopped patronizing restaurants that played jazz as background music from satellite radio because the sound made me ill.
Apart from noise there is the question of safety. If one concentrates on the music one may be distracted and suffer disaster. Even if one doesn't do anything wrong one may still miss an opportunity to avoid an accident "caused" by an incompetent driver. (I speak from experience.)
