read in audiogon it was just an afterthought and that a guy made a comparison of several dacs decided to just go spdif after going through a lot of dacs (mid end / high end - depends on what you're using).
thinking of upgrading my dac (streamer pro) to a 1.5.

I am not really certain what you are saying here. I have the Bel Canto 1.5 and uses the USB connection. For me I think it sounds terrific and was a nice upgrade from my DacMagic.
thanks. was just asking. there was a thread (in another forum) that said otherwise and wanted to confirm.
I ended up getting the 2.5 for the improved power supply and also analog input and dual display, but the two units are otherwise identical and they both sound fantastic. Really nice headphone amp too.
There are a number of professional and user reviews on the 1.5 and 2.5, and I have read two who stated that the USB input was not as good as the SPDIF input in their listening tests. I disagree completely based on my own extensive comparisons in my system, and so do at least two other reviewers, including Chris from Computer Audiophile, who specifically praises the 1.5's implementation of adaptive USB as proving that asynchronous is not necessary for excellent results. I agree with Chris. Also, I believe that the 3.5 uses the same circuit and it gets amazing reviews.
In the end you should do your own audition of course, but I think the 1.5 and 2.5 should be included as must hears for those who want to compare DACs in that price range.
By the way, you can also later update the power supply of the 1.5, though it sounded fine to me.

thanks. i read the review of the 1.5 at 6 moons. their review of the streamer pro is what made me buy it without hearing it. for me it followed that if they said something negative in a review it would likewise be just as they said. unfortunately i'm starting to believe my local dealer (and after what you said) and am now wondering if i should add a little more for the 2.5 so i can just do it one go.
First, his claim that the USB input was subpar does not jibe with my listening tests (and others', including Chris's). Second, his claim that the 1.5 requires the upgraded PS to sound good is just plain ridiculous. (This from a guy who even complained about the use of the control wheel on the front of the unit, which is a most silly claim - even the editor teased him by footnote). The 1.5 sounded fine to me as is. I did feel the 2.5 had a bit more dynamics, and I liked the display and analog input, but then again it's more dough.
But if you like what you have now, why upgrade? I would not do that unless you don't like your current DAC or, if you like it, are able to compare the two in your system before buying.

I actually was on my way to the local dealer this morning to upgrade from the 1.5 to the 2.5. I even had posted my Bel Canto 1.5 on eBay and Audiogon. I had one appointment before I went there. I had a good listening session last night and this morning and decided to turn around and head home. The 1.5 sounds really good to me and since I already had it the extra input (which I wanted to add an Apple TV2 for movies) and the improved power supply just didn't seem worth the difference to me. If I did not have the 1.5 I think I would spring for the 2.5.

Since I'd not bought either yet, I sprung for the 2.5, but it was a close call and I certainly wouldn't upgrade if I already owned the 1.5.
I'm glad to know there's another satisfied inmate with the 1.5/2.5 DAC. I think it is sweet, musical, transparent and gutsy at the same time.
