I have heard Chet Atkins, Joe Pass, Johnny Smith, Les Paul play live; I
have listened to a whole lot of other great guitarists on youtube or on
record. Tommy Emmanuel is head and shoulders above all of them; he can
play in any genre, from classical to simple blues, and do it superbly.
Watch this video for a breath-taking demonstration of his ability.

Follow Ups:
TE was a treat and a half. EC was in trouble trying to follow that, and he was even more boring than a floppy disk forum.
'even more boring than a floppy disk forum'
3.5" or 5.25"?
because there were some pretty wild 5.25" forums back in the day!
Maybe overlooking John McLaughlin who can play in any style.

And I've seen MANY of the "best" guitarists through the years.
BUT, I've listened to MANY of TE's recordings and his extraordinary talent
just does not cut it in anything I've heard. I've tried... it's good, but not
great. So, if you think he's great on recordings, you're in for a major treat if
you hear him live.
Anyone that has the opportunity to see him live should.

who can eat Emmanuel's lunch, rhythmically, technically and improvisationally. I give you, ladies and gentlemen, Pat Martino (and at a leisurely tempo for him):
I love Tommy Emmanuel. I've seen him twice, he's great.
But really, do I need to say that there is no "best?"
Is he better than Richard Thompson? No. He's different.
Better than McLaughlin? No. Different.
Ask Tommy, he'll tell you the same.
and there may be some guitarist hiding out there somewhere who is better.
But I don't think so. Emmanuel, Art Tatum, Martha Argerich, Charlie
Parker, and just a very few others have such a complete command of their
respective instruments that I feel justified in saying they are the best.
Which is not to say I don't like other practitioners of various
instruments, because I do. And I will be quite happy to be proved wrong
in my assessment. All I require is some aural proof.

Roy Clark could play nearly anything as well ... and did
was he the best? no
there's only one Jeff Beck! is he the best? of course not
Sabicas was a dazzling gypsy - flamenco stylist ... the best?
in that genre quite possibly to my ears but now we have 'taste' in the mix
indeed, the list could go on & on with the same answer
oddly enough it does and has since this will keep coming up forever
; )

nice! indeed, IMO the measure of musicianship is the ability to connect with the listener and communicate the essence of the song or instrumental
that goes for any scale they're playing in except the catatonic
which, not to brag, I have mastered!
it's perfect for a lullaby
be zzzzz,

plays accurately and imaginatively (i.e., he can improvise). Which he is
doing in that video. Show me a video or recording of anyone else who can
play like he does in this video. Not even Virtuoso, by Joe Pass, is this
good.

Who can say one guy's music must be more meaningful to a listener?I can say this, however: Beck, Hendrix, Lennon and hosts of others have written, played, and interpreted music that is beloved by generations of people. Emmanuel? No, not really.
John Fahey was a brilliant, innovative, and highly influential guitarist that I had the pleasure of hearing, both when he was a young firebrand and when he was a wasted old man (I saw one of his very last--- if not the very last--- public performances in a tiny bar in Eugene, Oregon-- he played music such as I'd never heard before or since, truly original and beautiful).
As far as guitar heroes, like Emmanuel: I think Roy Buchanon, if speed is the criteria, equals or surpasses him---- and the music does, too.
