And the strings aren't quite as seductive as the VPO's, unsurprisingly. Winds play their hearts out.
Ariadne contains some of Strauss' most achingly beautiful music, but you have sit for awhile before it comes. And goes. And comes back again. I thought the Suite might git 'er done faster, but no; I'll go back to my favorite, though not a recording to write home about: Levine's with Kathleen Battle.
Follow Ups:
I'm surprised to discover that the only recording I have right now is the Kempe/SkD recording with Janowitz as Ariadne - which I've had and enjoyed for a long time, in both its LP and CD incarnations.
I once played a recital in a private home with one of the singers on the Solti recording. (I forget whether it was the Naiad or Dryad - LOL!) Anyway, she told me some of the gossip about that recording, especially the difficulties that Price had recording her big aria ("Es gibt ein Reich").
I forgot how deluxe the casting was on that Levine/VPO recording, with Barbara Bonney as Naiad and Dawn Upshaw as Echo.
